AFK & Dustin H – The Morning Star

The second collaboration between myself and Dustin H. This time he came up to Victoria and hung out at Suite 410 for a couple of days. We had no idea what we were going to make besides something “really really cool sounding.” Our plan of attack was “okay, we have two days, lets do this” — which I find produces more good music than one might think. I think we really nailed it. The original I can describe only as Hybrid meets Quivver while hanging out with His Boy Elroy on a Starecase down to the Bedrock. That means there are big synths, some breakbeat sections, some four on the floor sections, some orchestration and oodles of atmosphere and other sounds that will make you go “ooooh” and “ahhhh.” His Boy Elroy, formerly a punk band, does an epic progressive breaks remix here. It’s slightly odd that he was doing the remix, as his remix of Blake Jarrell’s “Okoboji” was one of the big inspirations for some important parts of this track. I rounded out the package with a four on the floor dub which just thumps on the dancefloor. Pretty ridiculous on a big system, you just have to hear it, or better yet, drop it and witness.

This is the 2nd of 3 (to date) collaborations between myself and Dustin H of Seattle (L2 Recordings, Pacific Front Recordings).
The original mix is atmospheric, percussive, driving, breakbeat, house, and progressive all in one smooth and eventful journey. Inspired by the deep blue west coast sky and hitting the dew point at 5 AM. His Boy Elroy, whose remix of Blake Jarrell’s “Okoboji” was partly influential for the creation of this song, actually does a remix of the song and it’s quite the cinematic breakbeat masterpiece that would have even Hybrid weeping at its beauty. The Blue Star Dub is aimed directly at the all-night dance floor and delivers a massive four on the floor, bass-heavy interpretation, keeping the sounds simpler but equally as enthralling. Should be something for every quality occasion here.

a brief jaunt to seattle

things of note from this particular dash into the states:

  • on the way to seattle, i noticed how irrational tourists can get at border crossings
  • irrationality is contagious
  • hanging out with bands makes you smell like a band, which is kind of contagious if you think about it
  • dennys in the states is not like dennys in canada — there are non-booth tables in the states — not in canada, where everything is a booth
  • the clipper doesn’t have herbal tea
  • you can meet some very fascinating people on the seats that face eachother — as opposed to the ones that all face forward. I sat on a seat that faced other seats and met some.
  • trips whiz by when good conversation is happening
  • myself and Dustin made a massive new tune with no title
  • bent’s got a new album out (“intercept”) and it’s brilliant
  • it’s thanksgiving in Canada today, not the states. if you are in Canada today, happy thanksgiving!
