• saturday night done proper

well not quite proper, but damn close! filled with a lot of great friends, some chivalrous drama, and some great choons at the end. unfortunately i missed the vertigo action, but there's only so much you can fit into the night. now .. i am up .. early it looks like! for some reason i could not sleep any more than this. it looks gorgeous out; i am going to grab a friend and wander the city. it has been quite worth being in victoria this weekend.. for many reasons..

Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same
The more you change the less you feel

Believe, believe in me, believe
Believe that life can change
That you’re not stuck in vain
We’re not the same, we’re different tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight

And you know you’re never sure
But you’re sure you could be right
If you held yourself up to the light
And the embers never fade in your city by the lake
The place where you were born

Believe, believe in me, believe
Believe in the resolute urgency of now
And if you believe there’s not a chance tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight

We’ll crucify the insincere tonight
We’ll make things right, we’ll feel it all tonight
We’ll find a way to offer up the night tonight
The indescribable moments of your life tonight
The impossible is possible tonight
Believe in me as I believe in you, tonight

after much hmmmin and hawwing i am returning to victoria for the hallowe'en weekend. there are a couple specific things i am returning for (yes i am partly windtalking again) but all are good reasons on their own and combined.. well the choice is obvious. i'll be on the 7 pm ferry over and be around until Sunday evening.

other stuff:

my haus-warming party, saturday november 6th at 6 PM! if you know me you are STRONGLY URGED not to miss this event. it will be a rewarding experience that you will want to tell all your friends about, making them green with envy. they will ask themselves "why was i not invited?!?". oh yeah! so cool. pls help me feel welcome in my new place! housewarming gifts are such a cool idea. did i think of that one or did you!? i think we both did at the same time. if you don't have one or can't afford one, that's totally cool. i expect you not to use that as an excuse not to come. no excuses. just come.

there are some other major items in the music world that are on the verge of happening .. until i get confirmation i best not blow my horn though.. i want it all to happen. things are happening that i want to happen. not everything, but a lot of things. and that's from taking chances.. taking chances..

by the way .. if you are tuned into the fabulous proton radio, the internet's best progressive house and breaks radio station, you'll hear some familiar sounds starting at 10:24 PST.

time to get packing for tomorrow! hooray for casual fridays and backpacks.

  • uPod

here is a bit of tech bot crap:

U2 limited edition iPod

iPod Photo

uPod.jpg

U2 is my favorite band. But the uPod's only unique new features are different color plastic (which i like the look of, but it's just plastic) and reproduced autographs on the back.

$499 is quite a bit for a collectors item.

about the iPod photo..

beautyshot_ipodphoto_041026.jpg

this is a very good idea executed only half-way. you should be able to put all yer movies on the thing since they advertise that you can hook it up to a TV, and obviously the unit can handle audio. of course, how much would the movie industry like that? not so much. potential .. potential.

look at the size of the thumbnails. can you imagine scrolling through 20,000 or even 10,000 photos like that? the good thing is you can use albums that you put together in iPhoto on the computer. one thing is clear -- iPod's are not for input -- they're output only, unless you get a 3rd party accessory or somesuch.

to that end, apple still has not put the line-in port or the microphone-in port on the thing so i wont be buying one. almost better than a minidisc player, however still not quite.

  • will you meet me?

governmentandfisgard.jpg

september air comes cold
feelings rush back and unfold
speeing, crashing, burning through
memories in my mind of you
gone so fast too fast to catch
years have gone and can't come back
so now i've closed my eyes
closing seconds of our time

see the shore light up night sky
see the beach swing summers high
august shower after heat
smell of rain on dry concrete
feel the air turn cold around
see leaves fall blur the ground
wet road slide slither by
catch reflections petrol sky

when I feel I can't move on
and my will is not so strong
moments of uncertainty
behind your smile I want to be
down the front where we used to talk
down the streets where we used to walk

these places I will be
will you meet me?

--

those are words from a longview tune that they did with ulrich schnauss. amazing tune. i love the lyrics because i can heavily identify with them right now. it's like someone else wrote what i am feeling. so, thanks longview.

i will not be coming back to victoria this weekend. i am a bit torn up about it .. but i really can't afford to live in two cities. plus i will never be able to settle in here unless i spend more time here and get to know more of my friends that already live here.. there are just some really special people in victoria that i do miss a lot right now. and i feel like i am not that far away.. but i know when people leave victoria.. it's like it doesn't matter where they go .. they just are not there. and so i am not there. but.. please don't forget about me.

:(

i never forgot about my friends when they moved away, but i can admit to a lack of effort trying to stay in touch. well, maybe i shouldn't say that. partly my website here, this, is for staying in touch. and i've made websites for some of my friends that are far away so that we -can- stay in touch..

my personal phone is a mere ghost of what it used to be. it rings once every few days. a lot of my friends in victoria really are still a big part of me.. i think when you spend 26 years in a community, the friend-equity you build up is so huge that it's really hard to see when you're still there.. now that i have moved away.. i think i realize more of what i had and all the wonderful people i know there.

speaking of victoria and community.. tomorrow they will announce on the news on CFAX 1070 that i am the winner of the distinguished Citation Rose award for above and beyond community involvement. they sent a notice early today about it along with some goodies. it is a great honour and i am grateful for the recognition.. too bad i wont be there to hear it.

  • high ceilings

i had dinner tonight at balthazar. i like their pizza.

i recorded some samples on my minidisc from the weekend into my computer and i'm going to make a tune with the samples this weekend. creatively it is all plotted out in my head. this should be interesting as i have had the idea for some time and only been able to get the samples a few days ago in victoria.

i am going to go to sleep now as i suspect i have grown allergic to being awake (sneeze sneeze). tomorrow night i am meeting up with geoff and natalie.

  • staying in kitsilano tonight

i'm over at my aunt and uncle and cousin's place in kits. we had dinner and then played with this space arena game controller for the PS2. it requires and comes with strapped sensors on your wrists and ankles and a floor pad similar to that of the dance-dance-revolution type. it's a neat concept but still a bit buggy as we found out whilst playing Def Jam's Battle for New York.

and the next game..

Street Fighter was fun but the special moves which are so important take on a whole new level of difficulty when your jumping and twisting your legs instead of rolling your thumb across 3 sensors and pressing two other buttons. (makes the traditional hand controller combos seem really easy!).

me and tara just rented "saved" and we are about to watch it. we also bought some chocolate by accident. i mean, yeah. mmm, kit kat.

big day tomorrow.. i am going to get to the movie now!

i shut my computer / server / cable modem etc off for the electrical workers to come in and fix the outlets in the place.. which they did this afternoon .. and i turned everything back on and it turns out i still have the same IP .. amazing. so we're back up a lot sooner than i expected. hooray!

*does the the electrical guys did their job and my cable modem was unplugged and my computer was too (all day long) and my ip miraculously did not change and so my DNS does not need updating dance*

  • server going down tomorrow

the outlets in my appartment are being fixed tomorrow. the server will go down. the DNS will probably change again. sorry.

this is the only part from my most recent post that i will publish. the rest was a lot more interesting, though still suitably vague, but will not be published. i have done enough kryptoblogging in the last week and anyone with half a shred of an attention span knows what is going on. i thought i was being more subtle but i guess not.

tomorrow morning i am going to see what it's like to take the bus back home in north vancouver with two backpacks and a heavy record bag. good night. lots of lugging to do.

  • instant gratification.. not

since i started work at 7:45 AM this morning in Victoria (i work here today), i have a few spare moments to make a post. aww, look at the sweet words heather gave me on her blog:

"of course, the best part was meeting davin. he's just as lovely as everyone i've ever read says he is. now i know why it seems the entire city of Victoria is in love with him. then again, how could i not be impressed when he managed to make a photo of me which i'm not too embarrassed about?"

thanks for the kind words heather. it'll be great to have a photo-buddy in north vancouver!

yeah, i know, lack of pictures. you'll have to deal with my rambling for now. starting work at 7:45 means i am off work at 3:45 today. cool or what. i also have a work-related dinner/photoshoot at a client's restaurant as well, so there is more time in there. maybe that means i can finish work earlier than 3:45. we'll see what needs doing. i also managed to schedule a doc's appt. in this morning, which is great since this is the only day i am here that the doc's office is open. thanx for fitting me in, grand ole' doc.

i went to bed at 11ish last night. very unusual for me but lately my dreams have been fantastic so it's the perfect excuse to hit the hay early. and then i woke up this morning at 6:20 ready to go for the day. breakfast and everything. wicked.

tara is in town (vancouver) this week so we're gonna hang out. i love hanging out with her; she's like a sister to me. seperated at .. childhood. yeah. she's versed in homestarrunner so that makes her extra-great. she's studying law at dalhousie in halifax and i suspect this is reading break over there. she's a very diligent student so that must be what it is. anyways, this is enough for now, i am going to do some tidying here.

notice how good i am at not talking about what's really on my mind.

  • quick update from demitasse

i just finished doing some work down at demitasse with justin and james, and then some work-work on my own. demitasse just started up their wifi network and it's a pretty cool place to do a little bit of work-work and have a cup of coffee (or earl grey tea, as i am having). demitasse is on blanshard and johnson st. in downtown victoria.

AND they're playing junior boys right now. how cool is that? this is trendier than wearing lululemon at a starbucks in kitsilano.

i told a couple people about jon stuart on CNN's "crossfire" -- here's a link to krishen's little blurb and the link to the actual clip from the show:

priceless. those guys had nothing. i mean, you'll see. hahaha!

  • maxgrahamland

maxgraham.jpg

last night we went on a journey to maxgrahamland. ok that sounds messed up, but really, he was amazing last night. he didn't do his usual scratch routine -- he was purely using CDJ-1000's and no vinyl. cool or what.

my set at the beginning was 2.5 hours and it felt good. i started with progressive breaks and went into the habersham-like four on the floor, which really rocked on the loud system. i ended up in charlie-may territory by the end of the set, which worked well opening up for cary chang. cary and craig tagged for a bit and then max was in control of the room..

max started with tribal prog and went housey-tech with some breakbeat thrown in for good measure and then to full on techno massiveness before sliding into tech trance and then trance and then rock ? and then progressive again. my favorite part of the night was when he did the rise into the really dark and heavy tech-trance .. a lot of great music, similar to that of LSG's "The Black Album" which is quite non-melodic and full of huge percussion and general evil noises. totally great stuff which i had never heard before. near the end he played one of his own remixes of Jase from Outta Space's "do what you want" and it sounded quite good, though max was quite humble about it and said he still is blown away by the infusion mixes, one of which you may know from James Holden's "Balance" mix, CD1. choon!

craig left an hour into max's set, which i thought was weird, considering he brought max out. too bad for craig, because he missed a really awesome set.

max was on his way out so i ended up playing another hour at the end. i was not really prepared for it as i had brough mostly opening records with a few emergency records (just in case something like this happened) and i brought just enough to put together a nice little post-max come-down set with some hybrid, junkiexl, starecase, and bt type stuff. all of which max -used- to play..

i am really happy with the quality of pictures i got last night. there are some really good ones which i will post on tuesday most likely in the form of a new gallery.

i slept until 4:30 PM today. that was a solid 9 hour sleep.. i have not eaten in a while. i need to eat.. it's 6:18 PM and it's been 24 hours since my last meal. is this breakfast time or dinner time?

  • anticipation so pure

the anticipation for tomorrow's ALREADY crazy night has been growing for the last week.. and for all the DJ's that are coming from out of town .. tomorrow night actually begins tonight when we start packing our records and clothes for the weekend ahead.. i am stoked to be opening for the multitude of talent that is going to make for a very special night of a-grade music [musica]..

expect the very best..

and now a bit from the song of alanis' that hybrid remixed:

you're from new york
you are so relevant
you reduce me to cosmic tears
luminous more so than most anyone
unapologetically alive
knot in my stomach
and lump in my throat
supposed former infatuation junkie
I sink three pointers and you wax poetically
let's grease the wheel over tea
let's discuss things in confidence
let's be outspoken
let's be ridiculous
let's solve the world's problems
I love you when you dance
when you freestyle in trance
so pure
such an expression.

the picture at the top is the view from my balcony.. inspiring to see the city glowing and humming.. and a vew over the burrard inlet.. very cool indeed. there is a vancouver bloggers meet up tonight that i will be attending, tho not for very long as i need to get home and pack and choose music for tomorrow's rather epic evening.

  • well that took.. longer

than i thought it would .. but it must be done by now.. of course, while the blog was down, i took the time to work on possibly my best piece of web design -ever-. in the span of 2.5 hours i put together a 3rd draft of a website for my secret australian client and i am verihappy with it. if he doesn't use it, i might just use it myself. for something. haha.

here is a picture of amalia. she is a fabulous interior designer from montreal. she is going to come over and help me decorate / design my new appartment! right now it's lookin' pretty blank. i am going through my photos probably tomorrow night and picking out a shortlist of ones i want to get blown up and framed for the walls. i started last night. i think i'll look through again tonight and see what i can see!

there is a van-blogger meet on thursday night. i am going. it will be cool. oh! i think tonight may be the night i give myself enough time to sleep properly. finally. there is so much to do, so little time.. oh .. and i wanted to finish that new tiebreaker track before friday.. but that is really unlikely now that i am booked through TIL friday.. sheesh! i need a clock.

when things are moving they really are moving. i had a really productive day at work and at home today. also, in pacific front recordings news, we've nailed down a new look for the logo (same concept, heavily modified) with James Roy. that was snappy!! great new colors, fantastic type treatment and a symbol which commands fear and respect. like tron, baby. yeah. i can't wait to see PFR get on the merchandising tip. that will be kick ass. this logo puts most sports teams to shame, and whips the weak behind of most record label logos. i love marketing with a great team.

that there above this is the twisted-together ethernet cat-5 cable which davin.ws (and previously davin.dhs.org) ran on for what i guess is 2 years. the cloth beside it is my old bed. and when those wires touched, the cat-5 would fail and the connection would die. which means the webserver would go down. sometimes i would roll over in my sleep and take out my webserver. this is now a thing of the past.

so now that this new connection is going .. i need your feedback.. is the site now faster, or slower? or no different? i am hoping for 100% server uptime for the next half year.

anyways.. i time to drink some tea and hit the hay. good night!

  • anxious anxious anxious

this will likely be my last update before moving the server tomorrow.. so expect a 'fake' davin.ws to appear from monday-tuesday as the server moves..

i had a fantastic meeting with james roy and justin humber today.. we're plotting out pacificfront.ca V.2 and it's great to have hooked up with such a talented and energetic designer like james.. great things are ahead.. you shall see..

the two shots were taken around midnight on the same full moon as the stone lady series.. love the lighting of the full moon.

  • the stone lady

i feel really odd right now. just strange.. my old room feels so .. half there.. and my new place feels so half-there as well.. i feel like i am neither here nor there yet.. i am sure this will pass once i have all the computer stuff over there, plus the clothes i was missing..

i brought my tennis racquet with me in hopes of playing a bit.. we'll see if that happens. so far the weekend has not gone how i thought it would. is that bad? so far it's proven to be good, albeit still a little disappointing. i am a plan whore. i love making plans. plans plans plans. some i figure wont end up working, others i really want to work.. but then they don't... and yeah. it is energy draining. you get excited, you get psyched.. and then it just isn't there. it doesn't happen. that'll teach me to get excited about something. blah. i dont often get excited. anyways that is out of my system and i am moving on now.

it is time to leave some things and situations behind.

it was such a fucking battle to get back to the island last night.. i ran to the bus-stop to catch the bus to the seabus.. the bus came late, and drove straight by all 3 of us at the bus stop. "that's weird" i said to one of the other people. an older man responded "it's plain maddening is what it is." yeah, no kidding. another unscheduled bus came by and i made the seabus by 30 seconds before departure. nice little journey over. then i walked briskey to the waterfront skytrain terminal to go to main street -- that's where the bus depot is. i got on the skytrain no problem.. cutting it close in terms of getting to the depot on time.. but not toooooo close. i was on schedule to make the 7 PM ferry. an announcement came on -- "due to a police situation at the main street van-city branch, we will not be stopping at main street skytrain station." great. so the skytrain will go past main street, but not stop there. efff. fine, i'll take the bus from the stop before that, and run like hell to the bus depot. great. so we travel to burrard stop, pick up some people, the same announcement gets played. then we get to granville, and the same announcement gets played. except the skytrain doesn't start moving this time. it occurs to everyone (during rush hour) at the same time that they all have to get out and take the bus or walk. mass exodus.

run up 300 stairs.

run onto the street.

which way am i going?

the road was slight tilted downwards, so i ran that way towards what i figured to be hastings. it was. i looked to my left and there was the main street bus. my savior ? no. i got on it, and it trundled slowly into china town and then stopped. i got off it, ran through the pouring rain 8 blocks to the bus depot to see the buses leaving and myself, sweaty from the run, wet from the rain, and tired from the daggers being thrown my way, thwarting my efforts to get back to victoria. it was not meant to be, by 1 minute. vancouver had stopped me. i sat in the bus depot and waited almost 3 hours for the next bus to catch to the ferries. the rush hour one had to leave earlier due to traffic... and the last one didn't need to leave very early to make it on the 9 pm ferry. we drive out there, there are many pickups on the way, and the bus driver isn't sure if we'll make it on. we get there, in time, so we think, but there is still much to do before getting on the ferry. the bus must take on some people from the airport and do a luggage switch and exchange with the walk-off people. we drive on the ferry. i have never seen a spot reserved for a PCL bus, the only one left. we were the last ones on with barely enough room for us, and that was just plain weird. we were so close to not making it.

whatever. that is my moan and groan story. now i can spare you all when i see you in person. i met this cool guy on the bus on the way down though, his name is rob and he had the guts to ask if anyone was sitting beside me (my bag was there.) we talked the whole drive down to the ferry about the film industry he is in and also what i do. nice to meet you, thanx for the conversation.. it made for a more pleasant trip instead of the anxiousness i felt all day and evening. i slept a bit on the boat, and had some bad soup with an equally bad coffee.

i have not eaten well today. i am feeling a little anxious. i felt anxious last night. it must be the coffee. bad coffee, evil coffee. die, coffee.

what next.. what next..

i feel really negative right now. i have a lot to be happy about. i feel to be in a bit of a rut .. perhaps because my creative outlets are a bit cut off right now. that's probably all it is.

i want to make music. i want to make some really awesome music. i am listening to quivver's 'these are the days' right now. it's really awesome -- not hopelessly fluffy, but uplifting in a very intelligent way. brilliant composition. when i was waiting for the bus last night, i read more of the book that jordan gave me.. "the creative habit" by twyla tharp. it gave me some fabu ideas for composition .. and i want to use them. but i can't yet.

i picked up hybrid's new 'edit' of their own tune "blackout", where they put the beat and the piano and the structure of their REM remix (which will not be getting released.. but if you saw them in victoria, you heard it .. and other internet mixes that they have done.. it's amazing.) it worked out quite well, but in the places where REM -was-, i still expect to hear michael stipe wailing about answers from the great beyond. such an amazing remix. anyhow, it is quite good and definitely worth the dosh -- it has kirsty hawkshaw (fine day, opus 3) on vocals.

anyways, i must go. msn is being a fuck, so i wont be online until it stops being such a pain in the ass. i'm going to spyguy's b-day party and then probably out to hush or where-ever i end up. i really feel like ending up somewhere, like something different. i know, in victoria. in victoria.

here is what we did. we started at the cherry bank rib haus and ate dinner. it was totally great. then we went to temple and sat in The Room which everyone had previously reported would be way too small for anything fun. but it was perfect.. then we went to hugos, and then to dennys, and then back downtown to wander around until 5 in the morning. yeah! it was a great night on the town.

today is saturday, i am in victoria for the long weekend. i met up with andrew (hapy), richard (switchdawg), and spyguy (ben) at QV's last night, and then dropped by hush where i was greeted with a lot of "aren't you gone?"'s .. to which i responded "yes i am." i am going to miss hush, but not if i come back to the island semi-regularly.. which i plan on doing.. i can't just stop being here.. there is too much for me here in terms of people.

about vancouver.. i will post a bunch of pix from my first week there once i find a solution to my .. uh, forgetting-the-usb-cable problem. and since it is one of canon's older cameras (yikes!), it doesnt accept regular usb cables. dern. maybe i could borrow someones cardreader (or camera if it is compact flash) and i could download them that way.

today i want to go into town for coffee.. so ring me on my van cell if you've got the number.. if you don't, it is in my nickname on MSN .. my MSN is daving@shaw.ca. add me if you need to!

i thought i saw you
weren't you here?
it was you in the room
with me

i made some room for you
to stay

i did not see you leave
but i know you were near

  • new adventure

i am doing this update while i take a bus i have never taken before.. the #250! it goes from where i work (park royal) to town, where i am going to transfer to the skytrain, take it to main street, transfer to the #3 and arrive at broadway and main. i'll walk a block east and meet kristen and ben at JIRO, a sushi joint that does all-you-can eat which is good, because i be one honnngree man.

we're just about to cross the lions gate b ridge. this is one of the worst merges (consistently) that i have ever seen in my whole life. luckily the bus gets to go ahead of at least a kilometre of merging and so the whole deal is rather brief indeed compared to if we were not a bus. but we are a bus, so it is much faster. i can't believe how narrow this bridge is, the lions gate bridge. they recently redid the bolts.. not sure why they didn't just tear the thing down or rebuild it or something. it only has 3 lanes. that is pathetic. the second narrows bridge has 6 lanes. thats' way more appropriate.

i guess they would have to tear up part of stanley park to make it 6 lanes. hmmm.

so the shaw guy arrived this morning on time (how about that?!) and hooked me up. so now i am all ready to go with a high-speed connection at home. this long weekend i will be in victoria to pick up my computer/server/musicmakingmachine/picture collector/etc and some other things too, like that box of clothes that i forgot. that had a lot of my clean clothes, and the clothes i wear frequently. and my shoes.

i talked to my friend matt(bass) last night for 2 hours. he is an amazingly cool guy, and a great friend to boot. and talented, a mega talented bass player. we are plotting on making music together -- he'll send me 2 or 4 bar cuts of him playing the bass at a certain bpm and i can filter and use them and tweak them in my own music. very cool. kind of like what anand does already on his own. speaking of, me and anand helped soren do a faux-news clip for soren's voice-over portfolio. we taught him the correct news-intonation and then made a custom "news track" for him to speak over. the track took 10 minutes of me and anand pointing at the screen and reprogramming arpegiation and lining up some great triplets of strings in a chord over top of military style snare drums. then we threw his voice in with it, applied some radio-esque fades, and some radio-esque compression. voila! like buttah. that was fun.

this has been a fun bus ride (10 mins) but i gotta go. there is no one on the bus so that's the only reason i am doing this right now. a very smooth and quiet ride!

  • settling in - north vancouver

once more i move for work.. for BC Hydro is was in Nanaimo, and now for CopperMoon it is in Vancouver. things are slightly hazier over here with the smog that has accumulated the last few days. it is really visible from my appartment which overlooks the burrard inlet, downtown vancouver, and more. last night i watched 747's take off through the haze while the sun set over a glimmering city. it was surreal. as i set up my turntables and stereo on my new desks and tables, i got a real strange sort of feeling - some excitement as i get further and further settled in.

if only i didn't forget that box in victoria - you know, the box full of all the clothes i regularly wear. damnit.

which leads me to the purposes of this visit. 1) it's my mom's birthday next week. yay! 2) i am picking up my computer now that i am almost set up. that means the server (davin.ws) will be down for a bit while i move and then point the DNS at the new IP (once I have gotten it). i hope it is that simple.

speaking of which, on my epic ikea trip on saturday, i picked up an office chair and a coffee table which i need to put together. my mom helped me out on the weekend with shopping and setting up, and my oldest brother anand helped put the bed and the cabinets and tables together. not a small order of business. we started at 6 pm and went til 3 am on saturday night, putting this stuff together. it was like working on lego with the instructions, but with bigger penalties for being creative. in fact, there are no big penalties in lego for deviating from the plan, other than lack of parts to finish the thing you see on the box cover. this is no different. if you use a spacehelmet or a woodroe in the wrong place, you wont have enough to finish what was on the 'cover of the box' and pieces will likely get in the way. bad!

i am jonesing for a game of tennis.

i am going to a vancouver bloggers meetup on the 14th. it'll be nice to meet some new folks .. i figure i know a few van bloggers already, and some i have only spoken to online.. so it will be neat. reminds me of STS'ing. except we all have really big slash-m-e's now.. baha. and that's an STS joke. so if you don't get it, then that's great. you weren't an übernerd in the early 90's. that's okay! i am not judging. are you?

listening to: LSG - my time is yours.

i have a new vancouver phone number which you can find on my MSN nickname. if you don't have my MSN.. it is daving@shaw.ca.
