and another track is done. the name for this track came to me for whatever reason and i could not -not- write a tune to go with it. and i think it's one of my finest to date, once again pushing my production to a new level, 'cause the fun is in the innovation, especially when you're crossing genres as this one does. there is not a spot in the track where the hithats break -- this is a veritable wall of sound without a doubt. and it's got punch to it. and large noises, of course -- large noises. i played it saturday night at the pirate party and it thumped really well. i played it after that new hybrid remix of grayarea's "gravity", which i bought on vinyl from boomtown.
i hate vinyl.
let me qualify this. i disliked vinyl and the imperfections that it is susceptable to. however, saturday night is when i actually started to hate on it. one of the many problems with vinyl is the needle that is needed to make sound with vinyl. some needs are good, others not as good, and finally, some needles just decide to break randomly in the middle of a performance on 15,000 watt system.
such as the one sitting on that hybrid remix of grayarea. it decided to break mid-cue and drag on the record, skipping and producing muddy sound and awful bass response. so much for the mix. at this point in the night (just after midnight), i didn't want to stop the music, so it kept going, though not sounding as spectacular as it usually would, or for that matter, should. this is a fabulous piece, one of hybrid's best in recent years.
so what do you mix out of a failing needle?
i decided the only DJ tool i had fit for the job was the Dance of the Minataur, with its huge DJ lead in. so, i threw the CDr in the CDJ-1000, and then i layered that underneath the crappy sounding output of that needle and it worked perfectly. the lead in gave the hybrid remix enough time to play itself out before the massive bongos of DotM came in and picked up the groove.
i wasn't quite prepared for how the bassdrum would sound.
the woosh came before the 65th bar and then..
THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMPTHUMP THUMP THUMP THUMPTHUMPTHUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMPTHUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP!
[echo, natural hall reverb]
dude! this was huge. it sounded completely massive! it sounded like one of those memorial arena parties with the huge wide open spaces and the large sound systems. this was a decent sized sound system but no other bass drum sounded like this the whole night. this was totally fully what i want!
so happy with that.
and then it occured to me, since, you know, the track had only been finished for a few hours, that i had never really mixed anything out of it in front of people before. i had been playing breaks for a bit and wanted to go in a different direction. so, like i did with the radio show, i played ASAP - Heavy Water afterwards and it worked out quite well.
the best thing about this was that during DotM i barely looked at the crowd to see the crowd response. i knew that the track was going to work and it did. while i was turned around looking through records, i could hear yelling and shouting of approval. it was awesome, but i was too busy preparing for the next mix to take it in. what a great crowd too -- the dancefloor was full by 11 PM and stayed that way until i left at around 3 or 4 AM. the other DJ's (nigel haze, yoseff and josh) played quite well, so it was probably no coincidence.
i don't have any plans for this track yet. as far as things go on pacific front, there is plenty of material waiting to be released already, though i am pretty certain we're looking for a remix of Dreamcache now.
that's all for now on the music front!

- August 18, 2004

my computer is kicking some ass these days. dual monitors are coming in handy in more and more ways.. i am recording vinyl directly into the computer so i can use the tracks in my upcoming proton radio mix, which i have been promising for some time. well, now i am doing it! if you know my previous proton radio featured artist mix, you know that this is a massive undertaking. a 3 hour cohesive mix. that is more than three times harder than mixing a simple mix cd. these proton mixes are huge undertakings for me, but i quite enjoy them. now that i have a tonne of material, and so do a lot of pacific front artists and potential pacific front artists, it is a great time to put together a mix to coincide with the music label launch. tracklistings. teasing. promoting. spreading the word, spreading the sound. ahh, marketing strategy. i love it.
by the way .. that also means.. if you have material that you would like me to consider for inclusion on the mix .. please contact me! new stuff == great!
today i had lunch with emrys who heads up rocket day, a design and arts company with bases across canada. we ended up talking electronic music almost the whole time, which was really cool. there is plenty to talk about in that regard, and with his travelling and the places he has lived, he has made some very interesting connections and now that he lives here on the west coast he wants to bring some of that talent out here. needless to say we had more to talk about than we had time for! good times, and i am glad we got a chance to meet and share stories.
after work, this evening, i met up with james roy, who did the rather stunning graphic design work for www.vemf.ca. he brought bruce beil with him -- the two of them did a rather awesome job of putting together the victoria electronic music festival this year, and from all accounts it was quite a success. we talked about how it went, what they did right and what they would like to change for next year. since their goal and vision is very similar to mine and nick's vision for resonance, we of course had plenty to talk about. music, design, public relations, marketing, organization, production, dj's, music labels, cross promotion, brand equity, etc etc. what a fabulous day!
i fixed the iPhoto library for good and i know exactly what to do in the future when any problem happens with the image database. yes!
i gotta go. pictures will be returning to the forefront of the blog soon.. there are a lot waiting and more to be taken..

AFK - Magnetic

The first release on Pacific Front Recordings was my own "Magnetic". I remember taking this over to Charles' (c79 / Obakeh / Chompers) place when I finished it and I played it for him to see what he thought. He responded with "You're a madman!" I took it as a complement and before you know it, Charles had done a remix and Justin (Formulate) did a remix, and Charles did another remix and we had sealed the deal. Pacific Front had its first release and we had set the standard for the times to come.
- AFK - Magnetic (Original mix)
- AFK - Magnetic (Formulate remix)
- AFK - Magnetic (Chompers Mercy Kill remix)
- AFK - Magnetic (Chompers dub)

eek!
it's been a while since i posted anything. i am still alive! shh.
i am sorting out some bits with the computer, largely.
and still the iPhoto library, home to some 22,000+ of my photos, seems to have forgotten how to see my photos. it's okay, i know they're still there. the library index database file was one of the casualties of the western digital hard drive failure of a few weeks ago. alas. still trying to fix it.. it's a 25 gig library, so attempts are made over-night.
that being said, i have still been taking photos. i have them on another account which holds them for now, but as it appears.. it doesn't really work for me to have two accounts.. i am too lazy to switch between users for photo cataloguing purposes, and it's usually happening that i get to the computer at the very very end of the day. whatever.
i helped tim move tonight. move his records, that is. he is storing all his wax at my house for a bit and it is so tempting to look through them all tonight just to see what is there. he encouraged me and neil to, but there is just too damn much to even get started on. as a dj, you're unreasonably attracted to large piles of music, looking and sifting through, searching for anything that you have ever had the smallest desire ever to look for. and just the idea that you once thought of looking for something makes it all the more attractive. yeah. what is that all about? i don't know.. but it's totally and fully true. ask any collector. time spent looking increases the value. something to do with perceived rarity. yeah, we'll call it that.
ahh, it feels good to be writing again. i forgot that i had been missing it.. it's only been two days, but it's nice to be able to express myself. that and i didn't really feel like expressing myself on the weekend. i was in a not-great mood and that effected me creatively. i obviously feel a bit better now. on the weekend i played golf with the gang on saturday, and then saw a local band ("jacob's fall" they're called) at lucky bar. then sunday i went with leah to the sooke potholes and relaxed in that piece of heaven that so few actually know about. you have to walk about an hour up the hill and then you take a left just before the quary. yeah, that's right, the quary. if you have no idea what i am talking about, it's because you have not walked far enough!
it's totally worth it though. like i said, heaven on earth.
yes.

last victoria show for dj ariz0na
i just posted this on the www.ravevictoria.com message board:
Hello all,
It is with quite a bit of emotion that I write this.
I am moving my home base to Vancouver in late September so I thought I'd better say as much, and a big thank you to all who have been supporting the scene here in Victoria -- there are many and a lot of them post on this board.
I might as well get into a list here so I have an opportunity to forget someone. Haha, just kidding.. I don't want to forget anyone. One name that keeps coming to mind is Brent Carmichael, one who I have told in the past has made a huge difference to the Victoria scene, without question. From the times at Rumours, The Limit and now Hush, he has given a venue to the music that we all love so much. And really I should say "they" -- as humble as Brent is, he is probably getting annoyed reading this and not seeing the other staff being mentioned. And as much as people have slagged Hush in the past, I'd like them to think about what Victoria would be like without it. Thank you.
And the promoters that put on the 16+ parties. Awesome.
There are also the strictly community driven efforts, like VEMF (though I missed it this year, the goal is an admirable one), IslandKidz, ravevictoria.com, and Resonance/RGM.
With Resonance, we're not totally certain what we're are going to do with it. Nick is thinking of travelling, and I'll obviously not be here anymore. The response to the show was not nearly as good as it was with RGM, but that 3 years that RGM had to get rolling with, in a bit more of a thriving party scene than what we are seeing today. That being said I believe our party scene has been traded for a really good music scene. Not a bad trade at all, if you ask me. And don't tell me the parties are just as good as they used to be. Sorry, they're not. NobleHouse/AMA is no longer putting in insane all-night shows at huge venues with Global Underground DJ's before Global Underground ever happened. Those were NUTS! Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to put down the efforts of any of the current promoters. I am simply acknowledging how incredible the production value of these events have been -- serious achievements. 50,000 watt sound systems, concert calibre lighting systems, 5000 people venue.. Thank you Nigel, thank you Damien, thank you Erik, and all the others that have been involved in these huge shows.
The record shops -- Stylus of past, ISBOW of present, the power of Boomtown, the dedication of Whitebird. We're lucky to have these shops to further fuel our scene. For over half a decade Victoria has been a better place to shop for electronica/techno records than Vancouver or Seattle. How do you like them apples?
I'll still frequent the ravevictoria.com message board, perhaps more in Vancouver than I have here in Victoria. Who knows what my time will be like there.
I intend to work a lot more on music production under the alias of AFK, as I have really gotten a lot out of making music in the last few years. The label Pacific Front Recordings will be releasing its flagship release AFK - Magnetic with 3 remixes in the coming weeks. Here are a couple URLs:
afk.davin.ws - AFK - production website
www.pacificfront.ca - Pacific Front Recordings.
Pacific Front Recordings will continue to focus on artists from the Pacific Northwest -- Vancouver, Victoria, and any talent we happen upon in Seattle. Obviously if you don't live in a big city, then me and Justin wont listen to your tunes. Just kidding! We're always accepting material, and we'll need it to continue with our crazy and ambitious release schedule. Check out the website for contact information. All the artists on there have been central to my musical satisfaction here in Victoria, and will continue to be that in Vancouver. I look forward to the future that we have set out for ourselves.
And what of "ariz0na"? Well for a long time, I have been wanting to go under the alias of "davin" .. which isn't an alias at all. Here's the story.. the first night I was to play out, it was almost 7 years ago at tammie and gerry's, there was this guy named Frank, and he was to play the only gig I ever saw him at. He said his DJ name was "DJ Davin" .. so I was like .. crap! I had never met another Davin before, and what bad luck it was to meet someone on the night of my first gig with the same DJ name as my real name, which I was going to use. So I used "ariz0na," my online name, and never saw him again. So I'll probably be known as "Davin" just like Braeden and Christoph and all those other weirdos that use their real name to DJ with.
My last DJing appearance in Victoria will be September 5th at Hush with none other than Hybrid.
It's been a slice. See ya!

davinbow
oh yeah!!
while playing tennis last evening, i saw what i can only describe as a davinbow. or a raindavin.
it was not raining. it was hot and there were some clouds in the sky. i looked up and discovered a rainbow directly overhead, except that it was curving like an "S"! now i have seen rainbow-spots ["sun dogs"] in the clouds before (usually horizontal from the sun, refracting against clouds), and there were a couple in the sky, but this thing directly above was completely different.
it was long, and it featured two seperate curves in opposite directions (like an elongated "s"). i didn't have my camera with me (of course, augh). but i don't know what it is.
what is it?!

2 years of creative habit
- August 7, 2004

august 7th marks two years of blogging on this server. first it was my IP address, then davin.dhs.org, now it's davin.ws. right on! there's a lack of photos lately, not because i have not been taking them, but because i have to rebuild my iPhoto library, and i am going to wait until i have my new hard drive (within the next week) to do that, because my photo library is around 15,000 pictures and weighs in around 26 gigs now. yeah! as the recent posts have displayed, i am having a bit of fun in illustrator and indesign to make up for it. my second monitor is running and this is so effing awesome i can't begin to explain it. it's such a nerd thing but basically the size of my digital desk just doubled! that equals more productivity in the music and graphic area. it'll be nice to be able to have my photo library on one screen and document layout on another, and blog entry on one screen, and photo on another, and dreamweaver on one screen, and the browser on the other, and music sequencer on one screen, and instrument rack on the other.. etc etc. wooo!
here is some news: i am moving to vancouver in less than two months!! :)
gotta sleep. finished getting ready (i think) for my trip to vancouver and seattle which starts in 5 hours! byebye.

- August 4, 2004

look at the people
everywhere
riding the subways
to times square
they're like little insects
crawling around
how many angels
live in this town?
the temperature's rising
everywhere
help me i'm melting
i'm turning to air
this is a new slacker song. it's so spooky. you must hear it. if you come to hush on thursday, i'll play it there. i gotta go.

starkid passed away late last week after being hit by a truck on a highway near houston. i found out friday. i used to talk to him online, send him music, he gave me feedback, etc. that kind of thing. he was very funny online -- he came into #proghouse as "jeyjeydig" and said totally wacky stuff. he was a brilliant producer, and a tribute remix disc is coming out on release records very soon.
he had a track on nick warren's latest global underground, as well as a few other tracks on vinyl.. not bad for an 18 year old.
it is a strange age we live in. one where you can get to know someone without ever meeting them, one where the loss of their presence is felt without ever knowing what the person looked like or talked like.
it feels strange.
the following is a slightly modified bio of him, musically:
Starkid was Adam Spears.
Starkid hails from Nacogdoches, Texas. A small town in Texas most famous for its high consumption of beer and for being "where the space shuttle fell down at". The music making began early in life with a natural attraction to Casio's and mandolins. An accidental software download led him into the seedy world of hardcore electronic music production. A dire love for pretty sounds pushed him to the warmer side of things, the club influence coming from people like James Holden, Gwill Morris, and Sander Kleinenberg.
"Melodies are so important to me, I mean like, really important." This attitude has kept him at the forefront of a genre drowned in congas. His music extends beyond club music, well beyond club music infact. He's recently formed a fun band with his best friend and Steve Vai wannabe Zach Jones, and a crazy girl with a million dreams Evelyn Malinowski. They have formed a space-age emo-core group named Babylumalautaroonie and the Jerry Lewis Bone-A-Thons feat. Athena. Taking influence from a wide range of artists including Tortoise, Modest Mouse, 2-Pac, The Blood Brothers and Dream Theater, their sound was a mish-mash of crazy noise and precise musical calculation. "It's like what happens if you were to like, you know, take a bunch of little kids and give them Fenders and force them to learn music theory, but also give them tons of pixie sticks and coffee. Thats sort of what we sound like."
The electronic side of his production focuses on "wussed-out" pretty music, either in the downtempo or housey vein. His past work has been featured by both big dj's and small, and on radio stations such as Proton Radio. His collaborations have included remixes for undiscovered gems like E-sin, and full on collaborations with full-time cigarette smoker Danny Moore. Their alias "Jey and Jordan" was a combination of their online monikers and personality's which are far more attractive than their real life counterparts. A mutual love for beef jerky and Donnie Darko led them to come up with a few tracks and plans for even more down the line.
Not yet a man, no longer a child, like Britney Spears, Starkid continues to develop in musical style. Though their music and appearance may be different, they share the same last name and often times the same fashion choices. They also share a love of fun, which Starkid stressed was the most important thing ever.
"Girls just wanna have fun, but so do I, is that so wrong?"

i am so sick
- August 1, 2004

i am so sick of being treated like a second-class citizen in a city i have lived 26 years in. some people disgust me. especially the person in the photo above.
i was taking photos on the wharf, and was about to leave, when this guy came up to me and suggested that i "please leave." i told him politely i was already on my way out, when he said "you better leave now -- you're being watched, you have no idea what is going on."
fuck you! i'll be back after dark. thanks for attempting to ruin the day-portion of the symphony splash, asshole!
