Yep, definitely a fly! My husband thinks it's a hover fly, though, but he wasn't totally sure. I'll have to send this link to my father-in-law; he's an entomologist and he never stops talking about flies. He'd love that shot.
That is a fantastic example of mimicry. A little defenseless fly looks like something to be weary of. Nice shot.

How very odd. I saw one the same day and wondered the same thing myself. I decided "fly" and promptly shoed it.
