the biz of the weekend
- May 30, 2004

having my own camera back is nice.
myself and maria went up to a party last night near lake cowichan called stimulate. it was cool to see something going on that we had nothing to do with.. it was good to see some younger promoters putting on a successful party. tonnes of new DJ's that had not spun out before.. some trainwrecking.. but tonnes of enthusiasm and energy. skills will come later.. some of the mixing was actually quite good, and there were a lot of really good tracks being spun.
it was great to see jessica, someone who i don't see enough of ..
one of the girls working the islandkidz booth is named jessica as well, i helped her and jeremy get set up..
the waitress at the beagle yesterday that i went to college with is called jessica..
jessicamania!

dinner at süze on friday night with chrissie and rich was just sooo yummy. süze is where chrissie and rich first met. later that night they showed up at the extreme 107.3 FM studios together. that's when i knew chrissie had met someone special.. she brought him to the radio station! rich is one helluva cool guy. it's awesome that chrissie and rich live close to where i work now.. i can drop by to visit them any time now! ha ha! so long süze.

the sheer amount of paper that collects in my room every month is insane! it clutters up my desk.
i wanted to show you something from monday magazine but their new web presence is a powerful display of the way not to put together a dynamic website. augh, it's awful! here, look: mondaymag.com.. some of the website looks old, some of it new.. and it bounces you to a portal to do all of this. weak sauce. and how do you search the damn thing? i hope they didn't pay for their website.. by the looks of it, if they did, they didn't pay much and they got what they payed for. heh.
so anyway, that old phone was a piece (nokia 5125). pretty good for a year though.. only the odd problem every now and then.. usually involving the battery coming off on its own.

i have a new phone now. it is a motorola T720. it's a flip phone with dual LCD displays.. big color one on the inside (good for phone book navigation etc) and a little b&w on the outside which is good for call display, time, signal strength and battery power. neat little thing. it came with a clip but i think a clip and a phone like this is recipe for disaster.. its really little when it's flipped in so it's small enough to fit in my pocket and i wont even notice it's there. so why put it out on my belt? yeah. forget that!
kimli is highly entertaining. i know her from STS days, a weird era of geeks of all subgenres uniting to make fun of eachother online 'cause they could and no one else had figured it out yet.
it looks nice out. today i want to get into the fresh air and also i want to work on some music. slept in yesterday, slept in today, and i've been taking care of stuff that davin needs to do. although uneventful, this has been a really good weekend and probably just what i needed.

stupid phone
- May 29, 2004
my stupid nokia 5125 is convinced there is a headset plugged into it and i can't hear anything that is being said over the phone. not only this, it is convinced that the headset is being plugged in randomly every second or so, so i can't navigate through any of the menus or anything. i don't know what's wrong with it. it started doing this last night for no reason.. help!

moving into the blog
- May 28, 2004
resonance will be moving into the davin.ws blog tonight because our website (on lefty.ca) is shutting down and moving to the conkrete concepts webserver! yay tech nerd junk!
i will be DJing on the show tonight from Midnight - 3 AM on 101.9 FM. expect to hear some new goodies from AFK, Tiebreaker and Formulate.. as well as others!
things are moving and shaking for pacific front recordings. we finalized logo this week and are working on finalizing a web design in short order. we have secured web space and are putting together a release schedule which is actually more fun than it sounds! we're also scheming up remix competitions, gathering more people for a&r, setting up "flagship DJ's" who will get Pacific Front material ahead of release schedule, and having a blast doing it! it is kind of daunting to realize how close we are to opening up shop. i don't know what our timeline is but we seem to be moving a lot faster than i had realized was possible. justin is a big reason for this -- he is a production machine and gets a lot done in a short amount of time. wicked! soon you will be able to hear all the AFK material i have been mentioning here for all this time..
there are few things cooler than designing, earl grey tea, ulrich shnauss, and burning rubber in the parking lot. okay that last one i didn't do, someone else did.
congratulations to chrissie on her new job. so, so awesome! we're going to süze tonight to celebrate über stylee. they close down TOMORROW NIGHT for good (rumor has it) so this will be great. i love their atmosphere, and although some find the music too loud and the drinks too expensive (adam pointed out [correctly] that they charge Laser Martini amounts for a regular martini), it was a vericool lounge-type place in a good location. katz in nanaimo is actually much cooler than süze. katz features live music and has a nice location and pulls off great atmosphere with their limited space. there is another place called "atomic" or something like that in nanaimo that is cooler than katz, but not by much. regular restuarant upstairs, cool lounge downstairs complete with DJ + turntables and very groovy haus music.
cooler than all of these is vista18, which is not so musical as katz or atomic or süze, but comes with a stunning downtown victoria view and ocassionally great service. i'd like competition to vista18 to open up somewhere. i like vista18 -- they have great food and drinks, but a place that was 24/7 with food like denny's on top of a tall building with more atmosphere [including live music]. you may laugh at that denny's approach but if you rebrand the food and add a few pasta dishes and some wine selection, you have a geniusly accessable menu with a bit of class. there seem to be a few hi-rises being built and opening up in downtown victoria now (slight shades of Vancouver a few years ago, though not nearly the same scale) so we'll see if anyone does anything interesting with their top floors the way chateau victoria put together vista18 way up high.
anyways.. i gotta run and meet charles for lunch! bye :)

screwed up!
- May 26, 2004

it's weird how as i feel more introverted i get more creative which makes me extroverted once i have stuff to show and/or play for people. what up with that.
my birthday party on sunday was really quite good. nathan volunteered to host the gathering after i told him about the uncertainty with the weather for julie's place. the weather turned out great, but i had already sent out my invitation with directions by the time julie had decided to go ahead with her original plans. i would have liked to have gone over to her potluck as originally planned but i did not want to confuse people by sending out different directions twice in one day. i missed those who were not able to make it (too much in one day).. some did make it though, which was great! anyway, nathan doesn't read this but i'd like to thank him for having me and my friends over. we weren't too messy, i think. and thanks to julie as well for the potential potluck. hee hee hee.
i realized that i have a lot of friends that have not met eachother. erik was looking forward to meeting julie since we've known eachother the same amount of time and they've never met. what! and there was a whole crew of my buds from The Old House that didn't show up for whatever reason i don't know. i saw those guys on thursday though (at hush when i was DJing with azim) so it's all good.
ooh, i gotta go!

this week in the world of davin
- May 22, 2004
rather than write a lot about my week, perhaps you would like to enjoy it through pictures. everything from the aboriginal title and rights protest, to djing at hush with azim, to the radio show, perogies, adam and i buying eachother birthday lunches, and more.. this is the whirlwind that is my life.

on the spot

last night I DJ'd with Azim at Hush. it was a really good night actually. DNA played an opening set, and then I played some pretty fun music during my set. i played dreamcache and i think it has never sounded better than it does now. i think that means it is done. all the levels are right, the percussion is bangin' and people like it. i like it now too!
it's mah birthday weekend! if you are waiting for directions from me, i will be sending them tomorrow after i sort out the details with julie. so! stay tuned. :)
more to follow when i get home tonight..

- May 19, 2004
Woah, I thought the forums were gone on moveabletype's website. They sort of are. Can you find the link? I have not been able to yet.. I know that the forums are there because I am on them right now. For new users, it would not be so simple. Oh, there it is, I found it. That is, honestly, what troubled me the most about all of this.
The community, any way you cut it, has been moved to the back seat of the bus now for Six Apart.
Wondering what I am talking about? Read this:
http://www.sixapart.com/corner/archive/2004/05/its_about_time.shtml
I can't argue with them on their decision to take the free community support and do something with it. That's what business is good at and is half the reason we have so many innovative products out there. On the other hand, some companies PAY for R&D, which is what the community has been doing for Six Apart for a good long time. For free.
I can't argue with their decision to make money on a great product. Hey, they deserve to make a tonne of money off of this software. However, their approach seems a bit wacky.
What this is.. is not an upgrade. It is a rebrand. New logo, new messaging. Moveable Type has shiner packaging and so they think it is worth more [than it was]. Which I agree with. It does look better. Is it worth more? It's always been worth quite a bit, but they're charging more for it than an iPod at the highest end. This price point is doom. The limitations are doom. The disappearance of community is doom. Basically this is an optics disaster in one of the most listened to and connected communities on the planet.
I hope their 26 employees are Public Relations wrecking balls and not programmers so that they can break through the walls they've put up for themselves.
By the way, if I was to continue running and upgrading moveabletype, the cost would be $206 CAD with no functional benefits. Yeah right.
Yeah. So what else is there for people to use? You can still use Moveable Type for free if you want. Once you register with them, you can download good old 2.661. Probably for a limited time. The new one is free but they don't offer any support for it. And like I said, the forums .. well, I don't even know if you can find them any more unless you already happen to know where they are. Weak sauce, weak sauce.
So anyways, we still got something out of the whole deal. But emotionally I consider the deal to be over. I may be interested in them from a business angle, but Moveable Type doesn't do everything that I would need CMS to do, so that's unlikely. In that regard, Moveable Type is competitively priced, but functionally falls short of other solutions.

the swan
- May 18, 2004
lately birds have been in my life in a weird way. a week ago when i was hanging out with charles, this crazy eagle took two seperate swoops at a seagull for dinner despite two crows trying to take the eagle out and a hundred seagulls voicing their opinion on the demise of their unfortunate brother. this happened no less than 10 feet away from where i was standing. i left my camera in the car that day because i figured i had seen everything at clover point. argh.
here is charles' description of the epic crow-seagull-eagle thriller, lifted from his livejournal:
I went out for a drive with davin tonight and we ended up down at clover pt. beefore hitting up alzu's. (where we actually met alzu btw) So when we get down there, a few people are chillin some kites up in the sky, and we clamber down the rocks where i proceed to smash flotsam on jetsam. and we walk around to the main point and check out some green shit and all of a sudden about 20 seagulls are screaming like crazy, making absurdly loud comments about each other's mothers and davin and I are like wtf? Then all of a sudden this crazy fucking eagle swoops down with a seagull in it's grip. We go "WOOOAAAAHHHHH!" "that seagull is fucked!" It was crazy windy out and this retarded seagull is trying to flap away, so the eagle lands on some rocks, then some crazy motherfucking crows start dive bombing him, and he's like "piss off!" then he takes off, with the gull in his grip, and drops in the water, so he's like "fuck, that's dinner!" and does two fly-bys to pick him back up to fly off to into the distance with all these assholes chasing him (assholes being other seagulls).
hehehe! charles kicks ass.
but i digress.
last week i went on a walk at lunch time and discovered a swans nest and two swans to go with it. the nest had several huge swan eggs in it and the swans just poked around while i enjoyed a sunny day. so, i made friends with the swans that day last week. i didn't have my camera with me, again.
today i came back to the place and stood on the hill, this time with my camera. i looked down and saw the female sitting on the eggs while the male sat on a bunch of dirt on the dirty beach. they both looked rather content with what they were doing:

take a look at the beer bottle beside the swan in the first picture there. that should give you an idea of just how big these birds are. they are huuuuuge. that neck is about 2 to 2.5 feet long.
i walked down the hill (very small, 15 feet high) and the male got up and walked towards me to say hello. after a while he got bored with my idle conversation and started doing swan stuff:

so i walked over to see the other swan. she was sitting in the nest and making faces at me, turning her head back and forth, watching me while i fiddled with my camera and explored the dirty beach. i took pictures of the grass and dirt, and some old radio (or something) that someone had thrown onto the beach years before. though i wont reveal on here (for the swans' protection) where exactly it is in victoria that this is, i can say that it's one of the most dreadful misappropriation of land and waterfront that victoria has to offer.

if you want any of these as desktop wallpapers, leave me a comment. they are sooooooo much more spectacular at full 5 megapixel resolution. :)

so long stylus
- May 17, 2004
for many years in victoria, one could walk down to a place in victoria where it was possible to peruse the latest rave flyers, look at local DJ's mix CD's framed proudly on the wall, look through a selection of local underground branded clothes, or talk to a friendly DJ or store worker. it was home to the occassional brilliant import record, which you could listen to or even mix on the turntables that were set up. the store itself usually opened whenever the employee of the day woke up and figured out whos couch they had crashed on. that store was open for one last day on saturday. the owner and perpetuator had a great time with the store during its 6 year run, but knows that it is time to move on. in this case he will be working in the construction industry, making a lot more money. his name: scotty. the store's name: stylus.

victoria returns to its equilibrium of 3 underground record stores.

i think alessa rejected my testimonial for her on friendster. friendster is dumb anyways, but kind of neat at the same time. i see friendster still getting quite a bit more traffic than orkut, which is also stupid, but cool and neat as well.
well, bye!

raving legends
- May 12, 2004

here is a picture (from last night) of nigel tasko, melixxxa, peter beatty and damien norris. this is, more or less, noble house and the alien mental association. they were responsible for a whole slew of great underground massives on the west coast, having brought in such DJ's as Sasha, John Digweed, Dave Seaman, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Jerry Bonham, etc etc. Huge.
there may be more, finally, in the works.

It was a bit of a late night last night. I started by going to Steve's (broken wrist) to watch the Flames burn the Sharks. Then I went down to Hush to meet up with Leah and talk to Brent but talking to Brent didn't happen. I was due at QV's by the time Brent arrived so I left for QV's to meet james pezguy where we then plotted away for an hour and a half or so. It was great to catch up with him. he definitely took the initiative in us hanging out in a flatteringly honest and inventive kind of way:
http://www.cheezy.net/blog/archive/000199.php
I don't like to go out on week nights any more as I like to start winding down by 10:30ish at the latest these days. Ocassionally I'll go out later than that, and last night was one of those nights. It was Braeden's birthday party down at Hush and so I hung out and enjoyed the company of some friends that I only see when I go out. Which .. is unfortunate.
tonight i will make music and by tomorrow i will have slept the good sleep.

something different
- May 11, 2004

so here you go, something different. everyone posts pictures of themselves when they're happy and feeling great. here is one of me and matt when we're feeling spent from .. i can't remember what. this is a picture from december.
i recently joined an online community as a newbie. i have not been a newbie for anything in a long time. pretty cool! it's a trinidad and tobago message board -- a pretty active one too. within a day of making an introduction post i received 10 replies. not bad at all!
i have been making some sick beats lately. it's all about the huge snares now. panning, slight reverb, compressed. lovely.

metabottle pt 5
- May 9, 2004

i had a great night tonight. i went by zandra and jordan's for jordan's birthday. i went to craig's birthday gathering at pagliaci's. i met up with justin, we talked more about music. he's into doing a remix of dreamcache and he's asked me to remix his new tune (which is fabulous by the way) which i am honoured to do. i worked more on the pacific front identity and think i nailed some pretty key ideas. this is going to be so awesome.
after that i spoke to gery for a bit.
then i wrote an epic email to dave prince, who you may recall from the metabottle thread. he is who i was looking for. well, he looked for me and found me pretty easily. we've reconnected, which has been really really good in many unforseen ways. he is one of my best friends from elementary and high school and has gone out into the world and kicked ass. he has a masters in neuroscience and he's over in scotland. yeah, scotland!
a reminder to all: my birthday is on may 23rd.. let the shopping begin now! heh heh heh.
here's what i want:
- the Best of LSG (double CD)
- Steve May - Open Day [EQ Grey]
- Quest - The Shepperd
- better dreams
that's it really. if i can think of anything else i'll holler. i am going to sleep today until i wake up. looks like it's going to be a beauty..

it's too nice out
- May 8, 2004
the radio show was a sketchfest last night, even though it was fun, mostly on-time etc. i think i played a total of 7 records, which when you consider the amount of time i put into putting together records and music, it's pathetic. i played charles paul's new "chompers mercy kill" remix of magnetic last night, which is a really awesome tech-trance bit (not really tech-trance but it's the closest thing i can think of) and it mixed quite smoothly. think nathan fake-ish.
i did more work on dreamcache last night. i finally removed the ducking tamborine. wtf was i thinking in the first place? it works well (actually) on magnetic but i never intended to keep it in the track.. it was more of a space-filler that i used until i figured out what i really wanted. this is more like it.
so i burned it to CD last night but unfortunately i burned a data CD of the audio track. i didn't end up playing it (obviously). next show..
this weekend means more work on the pacific front logo concepts and meeting up with justin and charles to jam on our idea.
it's too nice out to sleep in.
imma go play tennis with jay carvy, meet up with sir jim for coffee, and then hit up some birthday party axshun toniiight!

hey here ya go. this is something we can all participate in!
basically what you do is.. post a comment with a memory of me in it, and then post a similar post on your blog. leave a link to your blog in your comment, and i'll reciprocate if you make a similar post on your blog! how about that? eeeasy! come on, you must remember one thing about me.
you can participate even if you dont have a blog. just leave some sort of memory of me in the comments section.
idea borrowed from the geekgirl.

broken
- May 5, 2004

fading now
holding out
the innocent way
lucks run out
left this hole inside of me
crying out
screaming down
cause it echos within
the cat is out
no more secrets left to keep
the feeling is gone
we've swallowed the sun
one by one
the moment has come
the feeling is gone
we've swallowed the sun
and waved good-bye to us again
staring down
tears run down
and land at your feet
broken clouds
a canvas torn for all to see

rane empath
so i decided to buy the mixer i have been renting for the last 5 months. it feels good because i applied my rental payments to buying it. it's a solid piece of machinery with interchangable parts. it's relatively simple, has no effects, but it really sounds great and fundamentally is superior to most mixers. it's been about 6 years with that Radio Shack special so this really is a quality piece. i need a second video card for my extra monitor that craig graciously donated (minus $20) to the AFK cause.
speaking of which..
my collaboration with charles is awesome, but we need to revisit the track since it's been weeks since we worked on it. it'd be nice to finish it and get it out the door and then work on a new collaboration that we talked about today. it involves one other person -- a 3 person production team. i think if we're smart about planning it and divvy up the work properly it could be really be super awesome.
i ran the pacific front concept past jordan today and he loves it. that's good because we love it too. he gave me some more ideas for logos, something which myself, braeden and justin have been batting around for the last few days.
pictures from resonance: year one are now online and appear to be pretty popular since i posted them yesterday. over 500 views of the gallery in under 24 hours. rad.
i am doing more work on prominence, a track that anand originally wrote the melody and droning synth for a year and a half ago. i've done a bassline, percussion, and other bits. it needs some more transitions and elements but it's a solid framework for now. chrissie is contemplating doing vocals for it. we're not sure if it's the right track for vocals but we'll see!
i am giving dreamcache some polishing touches and i am really happy with what i have done to it. there is serious stereo field action now. yes!
i haven't heard anything back from anyone other than chris fortier on magnetic. i am seriously giving thought to taking it off the market and putting it up as part of Pacific Front's release schedule. the coming weeks will be determine its path.
that's all for now!

there was this song that came out last year by Sasha and JunkieXL called Breezer. every time i hear it i wonder how they came up with something so full of a variety of subtleties that all work so well together as a whole.
it's just so nice!
charles lent me both of junkie's first two CD's which I hope to have a listen to later tonight, maybe while playing bomberman if i am to be so lucky. i've also committed to posting more pictures from the weekend and also a year of resonance DJ's on the resonance website. gallery is installed, and resonance is a year old now. wow that went quickly and smoothly. from a semi-interesting afternoon show to a bangin' friday @ midnight - 3 AM show. support for the show is growing as awareness spreads.. we need to make some posters for the deal, though we may be moving timeslots again (what could be better than friday at midnight - 3? friday at 10:30 - 1:30!). we'll see. the 101.9 FM AGM is this thursday so that means free pizza and pop. plus we'll vote on some things as well.
last night i checked out ambi, a new chill evening at scoupa da soupa (government and johnson) that is being put on by yoseff, charles, and geoff. it was cool. neat space, good beverages, great music, lots of room. they're just starting it up .. officially it starts two weeks from now so i'll be looking forward to the next one. last night i brought some volunteer work with me and i got through a bunch of the drc stuff that i needed to, the rest i will do tonight and i'll finish off the status report. i'm doing some project management for them since their last web person apparently fell off the face of the planet and the project has unknown status. i do not believe it is telling of the organization.
monday this week is pretty straight forward thanks to some extra effort i put in last week. lots of work to do still though, so i will be getting back to it now!

erik's birthday party

friday night was erik's birthday party. we climbed mt. doug and hung out at the top between gypsy moth sprayings. ah yes, the good old lambrick park highschool tradition: the hillclimb. oh how i have missed you.

gypsy moth spraying
friday morning and saturday morning we had a little plane flying around spraying gordon head for the gypsy moth. pretty annoying to have a plane flying 100 feet above your house at 5:30 AM. thank you, assholes.
well, what is wrong with gypsy moths, why are we spraying them, what are we spraying them with, and what does that stuff do? these are the questions that most often come up, but the news fails to convey the message. here are the answers:
- gypsy moth characteristics and tendencies
- government of bc gypsy moth spraying dates and events
- foray 48b bottle label -- what is being used to destroy the gypsy moth. note the contamination details.
