in the mix
- March 31, 2004

i wholeheartedly recommend listening to chloé harris' kiss100 set on john digweed's show from this past saturday. find it -- it is floating around out there. superb tracks and stellar mixing. it'll help with even the toughest of days, one of which i happen to be having right now!

hosting and whatnot
- March 29, 2004
i am currently shopping around for some new server space .. i have been looking at infinology and they seem okay. . anyone have any suggestions for web hosting that can compete with that? i need at least a gig of web space, tonnes of bandwidth (10 gigs at least) and php, cgi, perl, mysql etc etc.

who is listening?

i wandered around with donna (picture) saturday and we passed by this green party protest. we actually checked it out for a bit. i was like .. neat. but protesting to a government that goes home for the weekend, on the weekend?
so we checked out a couple of the speakers. i thought it was cool to be in the middle of this protest, this thing going on in the city, in this province, at the legislature. but after listening to what was actually being said, which didn't amount to much, i decided i had had enough. we moved on to brighter parts of the city where people continued to say nothing compelling, but at least there weren't a few thousand people cheering for that nothing being said after every sentence. nobody was handing out pamphlets either.
pretty fun weekend, looks like i got some stuff done despite a general laziness in my bones. my promo list is complete, the writeup has been reviewed, and people already want to buy the track. now for throwing the demos in envelopes and addressing them. sounds pretty straight-forward.. perhaps i'll do that during the hockey game tonight!
go canucks! i've still been watching their games, despite a dismal past two weeks. they've won two games in a row.. no big deal, but it's brought them within one point of colorado for first place in the division.. if they can pull off this coup, they'll have redeemed themselves for doing the reverse last year with the same team.

"Usually a police officer who call himself a town guard is telling me that I am in town alone. then I can hit roads with no worry that I will run accross some car or a foot-passenger. This town might be an attractive place for tourists. Some tourists companies have been trying to arrange extrim tours in this town, but people- their customers scared and complaining about silence which is hard to stand in empty town. They charged 1200 hryvnas for 2 hours excursion and town guard says, they all were leaving in some 15 mins, complaining that silense is tremendous as if one got deaf and it ring them in ears and place is bad..."

i am uncursed!!

i have a canon G5 while the G2 gets fixed. not a bad trade, but i kind of expected more from the G5. it's not faster like advertised, and the main differences so far is that you can actually see the barrel (minus point) in the optical viewfinder and also you can set a bunch of useless crap up like startup picture and startup music volume. woo.
this all makes me want the pro-1 more. i mean i want to try it out, not like i want to buy it without trying it. okay maybe i want to just buy it, but i should try it out first. yeah.
uhh, so it comes in 2 weeks to the local camera shop. hm.
*looks around innocently*

i jammed with jim on some Top Secret Stuff and we got it done with ease! woohoo! so, be looking out for that, some time in the future, some where, if you have some certain kind of job at some kind of business, or something.

i am cursed!
- March 24, 2004

my camera just died. i have a canon powershot G2, which has proven to be an awesome camera, until now. the barrel is sticking out, like eyes wide open on a person that has just died. (i have seen that in the movies. i have never seen that in real life.)
man!
i have a photoshoot this afternoon. how untimely. the worst part about this is that i am just about to go to scotland, and it takes roughly 60 days for the futureshop to get one of their under-warranty cameras fixed. owwwwwie. this afternoon i can use jacob's camera but on my trip.. what? what do i do. hm.
i really want a new camera now, but the only one i really want is the canon pro-1 (the 8mp 7x optical zoom cam) and that doesn't seem to be available in any stores right now.
oh btw that's the sign up there which long and mcquade put up to let us all know that the logic audio platinum workshop was cancelled -- instead of using our contact information (which they asked for) to phone us and let us know that the workshop was going to be cancelled, they put this up on their store door. they get a big thumbs down on that one for poor business communications. some people i know rescheduled work, or got other people to work for them, so that they could make this workshop. dude!
i am cursed!

decrease in bandwidth
- March 23, 2004

i figured out how to reduce traffic to davin.ws. . yes. . i simply parked my domain for the day and no one was able to reach the server (unless they knew the IP). oh yeah, i effed it up good. i parked it instead of my new .com domain -- which i will reveal when the time is right.
tennis was great tonight. i designed a little bit tonight, i am doing a photoshoot tomorrow, and i'd like to have a good night of sleep tonight. so, good evening folks.

on the table
- March 22, 2004

i'm going to put some things out on the table here:
- lack of musical production has got me itching to do more
- i was musically exhausted after saturday night's gig
- shaw says we're using too much bandwidth -- this site is a large part of the problem. i'm going to have to cut back on the amount of pictures on the site. this was supposed to be an über secret blog, but as you can see, it is not.
- i slept from 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM on sunday. i woke up and read for 4 hours, and then i turned my phone on. i finished a book that i had started reading 2 years ago. it turns out it is a pretty good book!
- i am actively scheming for WMC 2005 with rishi savera.
- luke chable was our guest on resonance on friday night.
- 24 people came up to me at the end of the party on saturday night and talked to me. i gave out 24 promo CD's of shimmer.
- it's pretty nice out today. last night it was too.. warm, summer-like, the first day of spring. i went for coffee with a good friend last night who i don't see enough of. he contacted me, which was nice because i have been trying to get ahold of him for a while.. not for anything specifically.. but just because.
- i am super excited about going to scotland in just over a week and a half. woah.. my plane tickets are paid for, my passport is sitting beside my tickets. i am ready.
- i am super excited about work right now. it's challenging but i am being quite productive and i've got my goals set for this week.
- i brought 24 promo CD's with me to the party on saturday night.
- jacob bought me a footlong subway sandwich today! mmm thank you jacob.
- my demos are going out this week. my first one went to luke chable a week and a half ago. bedrock, vapour, release and baroque are top of the lists for the promos.
that is all. :)

ariz0na - Shimmer
- March 17, 2004

unlike some of my other mixes, this one took forever to put together. like, a year. don't ask me why, i don't know. one thing that didn't take long was the CD cover (unless you count the year i spent taking photographs for it). the cover picture was taken in january of 2003 in nanaimo during a full moon.
the songs on this cd are all amazing, start to finish. this is a cd with some real aurally shimmering moments, and after listening i am certain you will understand. recommended use: driving up along the pacific ocean on a clear full moon night.
TRACKLISTING:
- Chris Fraser - Posession (Traveller vs. Quest remix)
- Vance Musgrove - Squelch
- Voyager - Derangement of the Senses
- Hybrid - Visible Noise
- Hi-Fi Bugs - Lydian and the Dinosaur
- James Newton - Blackbird (Thomas Penton remix)
- Paul Van Dyk - Vega (Starecase remix)
- Blue Amazon - And Then The Rain Falls (Ocean Wave dub)
- Highland - No Way Out (Dub)
- Ecano - Run (Z2 remix)
- Qattara - Teardrops (Qattara's Whey mix)

the ethics of photoblogging
everybody knows that there isn't a true way to protect your photos on the web after you post them. any viewer could rip the picture off and keep it on their computer for their own personal use, and this is very easy to do because a) the picture is already on their computer when they are viewing the website and b) the user can permanantly keep the image with one click. two clicks if the image is "protected" by embedded flash or quicktime or whatever.
so what do you do? i have that copyright at the bottom of every page. it's at the bottom on top of the secret button. take a look -- it's there. i showed that copyright to a message board service provider earlier in the year after someone had been posting my images on their message board without permission and they yoinked the whole thread because of the copyright notice.. which compels me to think that the whole copyright thing actually works (and is respected.) well that's jim darn dandy!
something i understand, though, is that i am putting images in a position to be ripped off. it's kind of like putting jewellery downtown for everyone to see in the middle of a busy square, and then going home and coming back later, hoping everyone's respected the sign that says "this bling belongs to davin! look, touch, but do not gank!"
so is it realistic to expect everyone to?
hmm.
probably not.
in february, google referred over a thousand image searches to this site. i have no way of knowing if images were ripped off for evil use or good use. evil use would be for-profit (ie: using a full image on a poster without licencing it), good use would be not-for-profit (ie: computer wallpaper/desktop image).
now i am really not that worried about it, otherwise i wouldn't be posting any images at all. my photography is mediocre at best. but i do know of several amateur graphic designers that will take any image they can find on google and use it because they don't think they will get caught, and because they don't think the photographers deserve credit because there are so many photos out there. i am not worried about any of my photos showing up on, for example, a sony billboard, because a big company like that hires real marketers who hire real designers who licence professional photography or have access to the good stuff in general. those designers also know about copywriting, credits, etc. so there isn't a real big problem, just a slew of small ones.
does that sound better? no.. not really. but this has been 5 minutes and i am done for now. bye!

defrag more!
- March 16, 2004
man my server's hard drive is fragged something fierce. so if you're checking my site and it's down, or if you have a site on my server and it's down, it's cause i am defragging the server's hard drive while i sleep. (yes i am that talented.) this doesn't excuse you from having to update your site once you notice it is up again. vigilence, my fellow bloggers.
i noticed the site visits went from 790 on sunday down to 522 on monday because of this.. therefore there is 250 people that don't sleep at the same time as me! CRAZY MAN!!
the logic audio platinum workshop was cancelled last night. it was being put on by Long and McQuade and eMagic was sending one of their guys down to talk about L.A.P. well fantastic, except they notified us of this cancellation (after taking our contact information) by putting an 8.5 x 11 on the front window of the store. good work guys.. some had taken time off work for it .. i hung out with nathan, craig and charles instead and we put on our own L.A.P. workshop in Boston Pizza. sorta. we talked VST's and VSTi's and AU's and such. real music nerd talk, you know.
gotta get back to work, this is just a quick update to let you know WHAT IS UP.

don't believe anymore
- March 15, 2004

I never counted on this
guess that's the way that it goes
you used to be someone I knew
somebody I could understand but
now I don't know what to do
and I don't know who you are no
all those things I hear you say
you talk that way you're a stranger and I
I don't know where to begin
don't want to hear it again
I don't believe anymore
and this is all I know
I know I've heard it before
I don't believe anymore
and I remember your voice
before this happened to us
and I could see and I was sure
and everything was young and new but
we lost it too many times
and that's the way that it is
lovers come and lovers go
when you think you know it just isn't true oh
I don't know where to begin
don't want to hear it again
I don't believe anymore
and this is all I know
that's a song by an 80's band named Icehouse that somewhat recently received a fantastic prog breaks re-working by Ivan Gough and Colin Snape. The original band is Australian and so are the remixers. Hmm..
In other less interesting news, I will be defragging the server at night during this week, so expect it to be down while I'm asleep. yep.
:)

minibreaks!
- March 13, 2004
that's justin woo!i went with charles to go meet up with this guy named ninjadano. we met up, connected really well, and it was good times in general. we did The Coffee at white spot, ate some mediocre food and brainstormed. what was most important is that we got to know eachother and understand what was important to one another.
you may be asking.. who is this ninjadano.. he is a rather solid breakbeat producer from duncan, recently transplanted to burnaby. i heard of him through charles, who played me a bunch of his tracks. really quite top quality, and the guy is only 19. good on him!
i sent out my first promo today, with a written letter instead of track and artist writeups. this is partly because i think a personalized letter would be more appropriate for one of my biggest influences in producing.
it's saturday night and me and charles are making a mellow breaks cd. oops, i mean we just finished it. yeah! it's called.. well, it doesn't have a title yet. whut do you call something like this. it's mini and mellow and breakbeat. minibreaks!

monday whut?
- March 8, 2004
i slept from 6 a.m. - 3 p.m. on sunday, got up, had breakfast with craig and erica, and then went to tammie & gerry's to pick up gear. hung out there for a while, went to my grandpa's 92nd birthday party, where he was more talkative than usual with me. neat. after that i went to see the impromaniacs which was vericool. then i went home, nathan helped me unpack The Gear and then went for a trancebreaks drive in his rather nice 2003 celica. i was in bed by midnight, only 9 hours after waking up. i slept solid until 7:30 am, when i noticed it was light outside. i snoozed for another hour and then i was off to work.
what caused this schedule?
i will post what, why, and the pictures tonight. ;)
okbye.

open day
- March 6, 2004

this, or that is rather interesting way of spending time - or wasting it. i was just laughing at how i used to use my time a few years ago, and then realized i was wasting time looking at that, probably at least 40 minutes. really lame. at least i am multitasking -- i am charging my digital camera and cell phone while doing this! i am so super productive.
you see that salmon up there? it makes me crazy. like, 3 years ago i wouldn't touch salmon 'cause i hated the stuff that came out of the can. now this stuff, that stuff you see up there, it's like a completely different food. smoked, and dried, and i don't know what else, but i don't care 'cause i know it's natural and it tastes so damn good. yeah, that's real salmon. unf.
my feet are cold, i need to go have a shower, and it's the weekend! woo!

metabottle pt 4
- March 5, 2004

i sent christine gort an email today, thanks to rob for the email address!
so, if i get a reply, the metabottle is successful. if i don't, then it isn't (quite), but i made contact with someone who is friends with her, so that's still a good lead.
that picture is of my bud carly. we hung out last week for the first time since the [ahem] randy river days. i mean, just me and her. it was nice, ya know?
we're going to go to nanaimo one of these weekends coming up. we're gonna hit the town 'cause it'd be fun to be somewhere different, plus she's never been there before.
i got that weird feeling. you know when you feel both hot and cold at the same time? yeah. wtf..

dying to survive
- March 4, 2004

jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez,
i listened to the Shimmer mp3 today and there is an EPISODE OF DIGITAL SKIPPING that occured when I was recording and the monitor decided to shut off (and suck CPU to do so). whoops.. i should have set the monitor to not auto-shut off before recording.. usually I do.. eff..
this cd is cursed. now you know my pain. but you don't, because nobody knows my pain, or my ensuing turmoil, or the torment that comes every day that this CD is not done.
heh.
the canucks played a great game last night against colorado. both teams did -- it was a high-flying purely offensive game that saw two teams on top of their scoring games. either of these teams could have beaten any team in the league last night, had they not been playing against eachother.. the firepower was awesome. when all was said and done, the two teams split 10 goals and tied after a rather exciting 5 minutes of 4-on-4 gut-wrenching hockey. booyah.
tonight i am going to go see The Corporation with mr. charles.. jacob told me good things about this, james did, i think kevin did as well, and like, dude, it's gotta be good if these katz say it is.
i broke one of my own rules last night but it is okay 'cause i feel fine right now. heh whut! you may ask. well don't be askin', cuz i'm not telling! shhhhhhhhhh.

due diligence
- March 3, 2004

the prospect of another photogroffee has me excited.
i have turned in to a bit of a hermit lately to cut down on expenses. it has been successful, except for being able to shop for records online from my bedroom. evil visa. i plan on watching the canucks vs colorado tonight, but i don't know where or with who yet.
i slept well last night, but it didn't feel like enough. i actually fell asleep at around 12:30 against my will, which is a good thing. i think i could have slept for 16 hours.
anyway, just a quick update here. i am feeling a bit out of sorts lately but i know i'll work through it. i just need to get a little more organized and remain diligent with my projects.

break it off
- March 2, 2004
yeah. i finished the new CD last night. it's 82:10. oops.. that's too long for a CD. ahh, umm, yes. i'll have to cut out 2 minutes and 10 seconds somewhere. hrmm.
next: a breaks CD and then a newer border-community-esque CD with all sorts of goodies on it. oh yeah!
i just spotted a typo on the halo box. oooooo! how much did they spend on this game? heheheh. not enough.
