i saw you on tv

transparent bowling balls weigh just as much as solid ones
so, myself and craig are walking up johnson st. when we see mo sihota. he interviews us and asks us what our view is on a subject. we were on tv at 6 pm. now, the weird thing is with the New VI .. no one ever says "I saw you on TV!"
..it usually goes more like "Did you see me on TV?" I am still not sure how many people watch that TV station, despite the fact they have some of the best local shows this island has ever seen. sure, the weather report is laughably amateur, but they have some real quality shows such as On Target, Round Table and VILand Voices.
well that's my point of view, whats yours?

treva can't believe how hot ryan thinks he is
So folks, here it is, the results:
Votes for Paula: 11 Votes for Ryan: 4Male voters: 7
Female voters: 5
in case you are wondering what this is all about .. check it all out.
today ryan bought pie and gave me some and paula gave me a much needed massage. that makes them both hot beyond the superficialities of their superior aesthetics. they both get my vote!

smoke and mirrors
- March 28, 2003

port alberni combines the sublime beauty of fish street signs with a backdrop of industry polution on a gargantuan scale.
unrelated: i fell and hurt my neck last night. today i endured it. there are about 3 clinics listed in the phone book for nanaimo, only one of them that i phoned accepted drop-ins, the other one was private and the third didn't answer the phone. after work, katherine took me to the one nanaimo clinic that i could make contact with.
the clinic was a lot larger than any of the ones i had been to in victoria. i guess with fewer clinics it had to be. my neck had been feeling progressively better throughout the day and by the time we arrived, it was an irritation.
there was an hour and a half wait at the clinic, so i decided that it was probably better to sleep tonight and see how it felt in the morning. i'll just skip the gym/swimming this evening.
as the media pumps fear and loathing into the masses on the six-o'clock news, the messages from Bowling For Columbine begin to resonate deeper and deeper. it's pretty hard to watch this stuff, yet things are happening on the global stage that are impossible to ignore. it's not the same watching the news as it was before though. flipping from news source to news source really reveals some very different views on the situation. one news reporter woman from CNN went so far as to say that CNN's management might not appreciate her sentiments, but she believes that CNN is being too selective with what they are deciding to show. maybe she saw Bowling For Columbine, or maybe she just sees what Michael Moore saw from the inside. her own point of view.
i have trouble watching western-world television coverage by itself. as much as i don't support what is going on, i dislike only hearing half of the story from the media. i feel that they should also be showing television stations from The Other Side so that people can really feel informed. yes, the stories will be different, and they will be slanted the other way, but doesn't anyone else feel that from the two different points of view, it would probably offer any given person a better idea of what is actually going on?

taking a look

jordan is really only high on life.
today i saw a mullet of unbelievable mulletude. yes, i got a good tabloid-like shot of it. it's sweet, you'll see.
i don't much talk about work, but my concern from the beginning of the term has come back to haunt us all like i predicted it would. this concern would of course be: where are we going to have our end-of-term party?
well, we phoned acme. they have a cool downstairs lounge which we tentatively booked. the only problem is that it costs us $200 to reserve the space. the space they will use to sell us drinks and food. 35 of us. does this seem like a bit much to pay to anyone else?

nanaimo by night
- March 25, 2003
last monday i had a walk around central nanaimo when the moon was bright and the clouds were few. before leaving the house, i grabbed le tripod and le canon. here is what it looked like...

shadow cast in moon light

this is one of the few clouds that i could get for a picture

mt. benson looms in darkness

the nanaimo parkway

the nanaimo parkway

the nanaimo parkway

the red rock along the side of the parkway

a tunnel for water and such. i wonder if any ogs live in there.

east wellington passes over the parkway

the city centre is not anywhere near the parkway..

weirdness happened at dufferin crescent .. i am not sure why this happened. does anyone have any idea?

bowling with *rryl
- March 24, 2003

we spent several years studying, and finally we figured out how to keep score

movement in still life

the pink ladies show us what they're made of
yep we went bowling again last night. it was a dress-up err i mean down or something event. most of my team didn't show up, so darryl the rocker went on his own and recruited two fine ladies by the names of merryl and sherryl to be on the team of *rryl.
the pictures above are all from the first time we went ten pin bowling. last night we went five pin bowling.. which i had more playing. ten pin would have been more fun had i known whut i was doing.
by the way .. if you have not commented on the post below.. time is running out. i will be doing a plus/minus count soon. some time. so yeah, comment!

are these people hot or not?
- March 23, 2003
okay okay, so these people really want to know, and i am not kidding. ryan thinks he's shit hot, and he asked if he could be posted on my website with the question being posed. so here it is. and paula the potential ninja, not wanting to be outdone by the bluntman, has asked to be transplanted from the last post into this post.
folks, it's time to do your blog reading duty and answer the question.
here is our first contestant, ryan 'the bluntman' blunt. is he hot?
is he a hero or what?
and here is our second contestant, paula 'the potential ninja' kolisnek. is she hot?

a potential ninja, paula. you just don't know.
finally, in the spirit of voting for things, what do you think the word 'zope' should stand for? paula challenges the current definition and encourages a movement to a definition closer to the colour of bluish purple that happens only at sunset. your thoughts please. if you ask me, that would be a rather zope colour. haha
okay folks, lets hear what you have to say. just bring it.

djing in march
- March 22, 2003
djing has been really fun lately, and i've had some of the best nights lately that i have ever played. well, most enjoyable at least. maybe i have changed the way i think. maybe the nights have been better. anyway, i've got photos to remember it all with! yeehaw! the two big dates i have played in march have been at the pressroom in nanaimo with brad copeland and hush in victoria with braeden.
the pressroom - nanaimo:

while i was djing, brad stood behind me and didn't move for an hour straight. it was creepy.

morgan and dave

davin and emily large it

craig is assaulted by the music!

myself and morgan
hush - victoria:

here's the proof that paula, emily and saila came down from nanaimo for the night

- March 19, 2003

almost midnight on monday evening
yeah i did some more time exposure shots on monday night with a sky that refused to let many clouds in and a moon that blazed a cold blue light upon these red rocks at the side of the nanaimo parkway.
more later :)

rich watches television while holding his girlfriend, which he won on eBay. you can see that she looks a little surprised by all this.
i had the best night last night and the best day today. it's made up for not getting to go to victoria in a very very long time. well. . i'm not sure when the last time was, but it sure felt like a long time ago.
tonight i went rock climbing, and then after, in the moonlight i took one of my favorite shots yet. i'll post it when i get to victoria.. sadly i have no computer up here in nanaimo with working USB ports for downloading the pictures so that i can upload them to the site.

two of everything only tomorrow on tuesday!
my next pair of days off is thursday and friday and i hope to make it to victoria on wednesday evening, either via bus or via a ride of some other sort. i keep on meaning to find out about the train -- i hear it's a nice ride but fairly expensive. maybe i can get some sort of special rate on it .. anyone know of any deals on the train between nanaimo and victoria?

the first blue evening sky in some time here in nanaimo, or at least it seems like it
well, i made it. i have a day off tomorrow. this is what it looks like outside right now .. really pretty but not incredibly warm. i figure on going to the press room tonight if i can figure out transportation.

this post is basically a response to jim's post. so yeah, this is what it looks like out my window right now. i am at work.

pier support
sweeeeeeeEEEEET!
i now have wednesday, thursday AND friday off! on the flip side, i don't have monday off but i was not sure what i was going to do with myself on the monday anyway. it isn't enough time to go to victoria and back again. on the other hand, 3 days in a row is raaaaaaad! i can't wait to go back to vic.. on tuesday evening! now all i have to do is figure out who else is going to monday on tuesday evening and hook up a ride with them. i hope someone is going...
i have to say this. tim hortons has awesome turkey sandwiches. mmmmmmmm big baguette.
if anyone was unable to comment on the site, it is because my hard drive on my server at home had been filled up by someone. not me. last time i was home, there was over 4 gigs free and a 120gig drive with not a hell of a lot of stuff on it. this is really unfortunate considering how bad it is for your system drive to run out of room.
awww man, i just found out that it's against union regulations for me to work 8 days in a row, so i can't have wednesday off, i have to take monday off. grumble! ah well, i guess i kinda jumped the gun on celebrating that one. doh!@#$^*#)!#$)()$@
okay, so once again i don't know what i am going to do with myself in nanaimo. my aunt and uncle are going away on a cruise today for two weeks. i think i will watch movies and uhh see if anyone wants to hang out.. up here. yeah. sweet. rock on mofos.

i think it's safe to say
- March 14, 2003

a starecase .. err .. staircase.
i think that aaron's post about google bombing was very interesting. so if you look to the right, you will see underneath the heading of "stuff" a link to some .. stuff. one of them is a googlebomb. the other is not.
that being said .. it would be waaay cooler if anyone who is linked to me linked to me as "davin" and not "ariz0na" so that i'll be higher up on the list of davin's in a google search. i am a legit davin. word.
other than that.. i had a good day at work. it was enjoyable and it went by not fast and not slow. just .. normal speed. it's weird because usually time spent at work seems to take longer or shorter than it usually is, by quite a bit. hmmmmm.... i feel in touch with reality!
i am trying to figure out a way to get to victoria on sunday night. i believe if i can work that out, i'll be able to find a way back up to nanaimo on monday considering several people will be coming up from victoria to nanaimo on monday from work. they have two days off, i have one.
i'll definitely be coming to victoria on wednesday evening in any case as i am DJing at hush on Thursday night. it's been a while and this should be fun. omg i have to write that bio still.. crap. gotta go!
no bio. all that fuss for nothing. i assure you though, my next bio is going to 0wnz0r!

writing a bio
- March 11, 2003

this fake dog in a fake shower has more writing skills than i do right now
ok. so i have to write another dj bio for myself. the last bio i wrote i was pretty happy with. however, this time i am stumbling a bit for the right words. so far i have come up with this crud:
11:05 [ariz0na] ok here it is
11:06 [ariz0na] ariz0na returns to victoria after several months with tonnes of bass.
11:06 [ariz0na] ugh
11:06 [ariz0na] let me try that again
11:07 [flux] that's quite the bio =)
11:07 [flux] just email it to me =)
the bio has to be 50-75 words long and i want it to include some reference to not having been in victoria in a while. i know some awesome writers read the über secret blog so i am interested in what you think would work for the bio!

destruction of legacy
- March 10, 2003

hey, watch where you aim that thing! last night we played breaks, progressive trance and progressive house at the press room! we being myself and brad copeland.. who used to have a website but i can't find anything current for him. anyway, he rocked the house and djFil opened up with some pretty awesome tracks.
lots of people came out from work - let me see if i can name them all:
- emily
- chelsea
- dave
- holly
- cynthia
- jesse
- ryan
- matt em
- lea
- kathryn
- katherine
- treva
- steph
- erin
- paula
- anastasia
- sarah
and a lot of peeps from victoria:
- mina
- craig
- jim
- julie
- nick
- ben
- kevin (though he's technically been transplanted to nanaimo)
- dylan
- morgan
- dean (off a ship)

the memorial arena finally tumbles down in victoria.
the reason i remember all of these names is because i haven't had a good gig in a long time. it pretty much made my night seeing all of these people together at the same time! it was fun to dj again.. i didn't get to play some of the songs i wanted to, but i definitely played some of my favourite tracks. there were some questions about the songs i played last night.. some were new, others were not at all.. one of the better received tracks was 7 years old! crazy! rad. zope.
after the club closed down and everyone cleared out, i went to a bit of a gathering with craig and brad at roxie's appartment. it got pretty silly. cap guns were involved.
bowling tonight.
70's clothes.
gotta find some.
that is all.

sand on the beach at goose spit, comox
when you read a blog, you are reading [sometimes] some pretty detailed part(s) of a persons life. you can get a pretty good look at someone this way, and get a good angle on someone without even so much as ever meeting them.
same with any face to face conversation, although it is a lot easier to spin a one-on-one conversation in any direction that you are interested in to learn more about the person you are talking to.
i can only say i know a handful of people in this world, and i am acquainted with many. i know of many people. i know only a few. i am not sure how many people think they know me. i know i have revealed different parts of my personality to some people and definitely not to most people.

goose spit, just outside of comox. sounds gross, but it's quite a nice place.
how long does it take you to say that you know a person? what happens first before you can say you know someone? are you surprised by anything they do? what areas of their life do you uncover before you can say this? do you sometimes realize after quite a bit of time that you actually know a given person? what does knowing them mean to you? is it a pidgeonhole term? do you like to be known or do you prefer to remain without details?
i guess i should answer my own questionaire here:
- usually several years. uncommonly less.
- if i know them, only truly special events would surprise me.. everything else would be in character
- interests, goals, umm .. not sure what else.
- yes. it became apparent to me within the last year that i know someone quite well. much better than i know most people. maybe better than i know myself.
- it's nice to know someone. it means quite a bit, but i am not certain i have the words right now to say what it means.
- for some people, i think "knowing someone" is close to pigeonholing them. maybe it is for me, but i try for it not to be. when someone that i know does something out of character, it does not mean that i don't believe it is possible. i do not think i answered my question. guh!
- i don't mind being known. i am not sure exactly what integral parts to me there is to know though. i mean .. that depends on who you are.
you?

long day at work
- March 6, 2003

the backyard at work.
for whatever reason, days that start around 11 a.m. tend to just take longer than days that start earlier. i think i like sleeping in, though lately i am not so happy about sleeping extra time in the morning. it was a nice day though -- we had tunes blasting in the warehouse and we took care of business.
last night i met up with greg. we drove aimlessly around nanaimo, driving up streets i had never seen before. after a while we started to find coffee shops. we had aimed to go for coffee, but in nanaimo, after 10 pm, that's a hard thing to accomplish. we probably drove for about an hour and a half before settling on a place that sells coffee but isn't a coffee shop.
greg lives in a house with a bunch of roommates [such as p-dawg]. by house i mean.. you know, one of those houses. the ones that everyone who has been there before would refer to as The House, being amongst an elite few which deserve such a title. this particular The House used to have a hole in the wall in one of the [now] bedrooms, through which you could see the outside world. it has been covered up, but, aww yeah, this is The House in nanaimo.

looking across cameron lake. tomorrow i work in port alberni. i enjoy the drive there as it is pretty scenic. in fact, the next 3 days i will be in port alberni for work. i'll be driving back and forth each day, but that's cool with me!

i saw a bird
- March 4, 2003

this bird is safe.. but am i?
i saw a bird get killed today. i am not sure if the following makes me a morbid person.. but i have seen many birds almost get hit by cars and just narrowly escape. i had always wanted to see the bird get hit, but now that i have seen it, i really wish i had not. it was a car ahead of us that hit the bird and it was really blindsided by the vehicles tires. yuck. i will spare you the image -- it was disgusting and it was just awful to see.
i think people are morbid in theory, but when it comes down to reality, it is a different story.
blech.
otherwise it has been great, again, to be in victoria. it is such a pretty city in the spring, and as one columnist put it, it is the only place in canada enjoying spring in winter. it is so true. there are blossoms everywhere.
anyway, back to nanaimo. i have not seen any blossoms there yet.. it's amazing what an hour and a half of driving will do or wont do for your surroundings. nanaimo definitely has a different climate than victoria.

lets march .. or drive
- March 1, 2003

kind of a personal question isn't it? i spent the day in comox at their 'home show'. good stuff, it was pretty quiet. the best part was that shaw had a booth set up with the canucks game. i couldn't quite see from where i was but i got to glimpse every now and then.
on my break i went down to the beach and it was beautiful. got some more shots in, amongst them a really cool one of Some Sand and A Bunch Of Rocks. etc. the break didn't last long enough.

there were all sorts of businesses at the home show. the drive back at dusk was pretty and relaxing. it was pretty relaxing. there's something i really really like about driving on highways. i didn't have a CD player but the radio did just fine with the hockey broadcast keeping me company along the way. steph fell asleep half way through the journey. yep, pretty relaxing.
ahh driving.
