  • entry one hundred and seventy eight

on a spur of the moment decision (is that redundant?), i decided to go back to victoria for monday night and tuesday day with emily. it was so relaxing. jebus it was nice. i think it was monday day time at the office when i yelled out "arrrrgh!! i miss victoria!"

so, i have that bug out of my system for a little bit anyway. back to work in the morning and hopefully i'll get a better sleep tonight than i have in the last few nights that i spent in nanaimo.

that view is up on mt. tolmie from last night. i haven't been updating lately, but that's not because of lack of things to write about.. it's just because i've been doing lots of stuff!

last week i went snowboarding up on mt. washington for the first time and i can't wait to go again. i need to do some more working out before i hit the slopes once more but it was great fun and some more lower body strength will definitely help on the turns and stops. anyone can go fast down a hill.

as you can see, i also went rock climbing. that was a great work out and lots of fun. we went at this place called 'the romper room' and i definitely want to go again. it was my first time doing the indoor rock climbing thing.

devon, if you're reading this .. you should go indoor rock climbing if you haven't. . i think you'd love it. it rocks. haw haw!

also, we did our first set of elementary schools last week and it was good times once more. half the battle this time is not getting lost in nanaimo.. haha.

last night myself and jim went around with a spotlight and the G2 to see what zaniness we could perform with some darkness and time exposures.

we didn't have a lot of time to experiment so i think we're going to have to try again soon. like next time i come into town on sunday or monday! or even saturday night!

i haven't seen it yet, but word on the street is that i'm in an interview in the local paper for the powersmart stuff. 7775 people came to see us in 3 days at home depot. that is 15550 lightbulbs that we gave out. yowza.

this is what i would call the "whut" expression. it's not a gurn, it's not a smile. it isn't unhappy, and it's not joyous. anyway. at this moment, myself and krishen are both at 178 posts on our blogs. neat! he writes more frequently than me .. he started his blog after me, so yeah. he caught up. and here i am saying "whut."

like i said in a previous post .. last week had its up and downs, but it was really, overall, a great week.

so that red thing from that last post, that's an LED red traffic light. neat huh?

this picture above is from the midnightblue photo series. it's of brentwood and sidney from the malahat lookout. r0ck.

it's been a pretty up-and-down week for me, but it's been a good one despite some of the unfavourable events that have occured.

word to the mother bird.

  • listen, punk

i went rockclimbing for the first time tonight. it was awesome.. and i managed to get some pretty rad shots after my hands gave up.

snowboarding yesterday, rockclimbing tonight .. that's two new things in two days. tomorrow i don't work until 3 pm so i am going to sleep in a bit and go to the mall to get my tennis racquet restrung. sportchek does it for cheap.

i'm pretty tired from the day. a bit sore from snowboarding but not too bad.. i was up at 6:45 to go to work, i did the event lead at canadian tire, did an hour of overtime, and got more sore from rockclimbing. but it's that good kind of sore. yeah!

so, listen punk.. have you seen these people?

today, i crashed, i fell, i slid, i turned, and i stopped!

don't be a fool, go take a look at the last word.

  • and so i snowboard

there's a picture of me from this morning where i totally look like a surfer dude. except without .. well, you know, the surfing. i'll have to post the picture next time i make it to victoria. which .. will be .. i am not sure. auuuugh, i need a usb port in nanaimooooooo.....

hmm, that got me thinking for a few minutes there.

this evening, myself, emily and saila went for dinner at Gina's. it was awesome. totally gooder.

and tomorrow, we shall snowboard. awww yeah. i got these new zope airwalk snowpants for the event. they're so cool i'd wear them anywhere and everywhere. well i'm not sure about that, but they're definitely boss.

anyway, the mullet wig seemed to be a big hit with all the kids at brechin elementary. as they say in fubar, give 'er. and that's what i did.

turn up the good and turn down the suck!

  • argh

i've had a headache the last couple days and have found it hard to write. or think. i took the morning off work and then i felt okay. i feel somewhat better today but i think it's going to be another early night!

other than that, we have my first set of school skits to go to. wheeee!!

tomorrow i am going shopping for ski pants because i am going snowboarding for my first ever time on wednesday. i expect to fall over lots.

  • oh whut fun!

i went to oak bay rec last night to go swimming with mr. gurns. they had something there called "MEXICAN FIESTA NIGHT" where the kids bash the crap out of a pinata. yowza. i don't think i have been to an 'everyone welcome' swim in some time. it made me feel mature, or something.

it is a lot different then going swimming late at night. there are kids everywhere. tonnes of them. at night, you only have a handful of people. so, that was fun, but night swimming is far superior.

after that, I went to see "catch me if you can" .. pretty entertaining movie. i recommend seeing it. all the acting in it is great and the storyline is good. if you like movies with getaway scenes, you'll love this one.

i caught a ride back up to nanaimo with andrew. that's him on the right with cynthia on the left. we talked pretty much the whole trip and it went by really quickly. i brought a tripod up with me this time. vua ha ha ha!

anyway.. i've done some more research into this town of Atlin. the pictures i could find of the town make it appear quite small. it was difficult to tell exactly how many people live there from the pictures ..

thank you to the person who provided the correct spelling of Atlin, otherwise it would have been hard to find in a google search.

here are some Atlin facts from www.atlin.net:

  • Atlin Population: Approximately 450 permanent residents and 100-200 seasonal residents
  • Atlin Elevation: 2,197 feet above sea level
  • The Movie Never Cry Wolf was filmed in Atlin, as well as several TV commercials and a couple of Hong Kong movies
  • Atlin Lake is the largest natural lake in BC. It is about 85 miles long, and averages 2 to 5 miles wide, although much wider in sme sections. It drains a basin of 4,402 square miles, forming the headwaters of the mighty Yukon River, which flows thousands of miles before hitting the sea
  • Atlin Mountain: elevation 6,656 feet above sea level
  • Theresa Island is the highest point of land in a freshwater lake in North America. Birch Mountain is 4,561 feet above sea level
  • Discovery was also known as Pine City [I am not sure how this is a fact about the city of Atlin]
  • Atlin is the most northern and most westerly town in the province [of British Columbia], located at latitude N 59"35' and longitude W 133"40'
  • Longest Day: On June 21st, the sun rises at 4:35 AM, and sets at 11:18 PM, giving us 18 hours and 42 minutes of sunlight. This provides a short but intense growing season. It is light enough to take photographs at midnight [w00t!]

  • pieces of me

being in victoria is weird. i woke up in my bed this morning to wonder if the last two weeks have been a dream. for the first time since i left, i woke up in sunlight .. and everything is the way i left it when i was last here.

except i have mail. and a cheque. woooo!!

it is time to download pictures from the past week. i took some of my favorite shots last night and the night before.

btw, i apologize for the jpeg artifacting in that album and all the other ones too. i'm going to have to change the settings on the import in the gallery app. click on an image twice to see the extra big version of each picture. it looks better.

if you are one of my co-workers and are looking for bchydro photos .. i'm posting those too, just not yet. :)

it appears that i'm flying up to Whitehorse with anastasia feb 11th and then driving down to Atland to talk to a town about being powersmart. this is good. i love flying and haven't flown in many moons. my 3 readers who have been reading this blog since i started blogging will understand the significance of this.

next wednesday i am going up to mt. washington to go skiing for the second time ever in my life. oh booooyeeee!

  • possibly maybe

i was going to post the lyrics to bjork's "possibly maybe," but after reading them, i don't think i like them all that much. i thought they were more subtle but perhaps it is just that i don't understand what she's actually singing all the time.. still a good song though.

speaking of good music, the new massive attack album that is due out in february is boss. the last track is soooooo good. it's darker than usual but it's a pleasure to listen to, without a doubt.

and speaking of albums, i hear the new hybrid album is circulating. it's too bad that the promo deal between hybrid and my radio show never really worked out properly .. i got all of their stuff, but it could have been more solid, quicker .. all of those things. then again, hybrid said their album was going to come out a year and a half ago .. it seems that there were several loose ends or something. there has definitely been enough time between the albums. to say i am looking forward to this one is a serious case of understatement.

today was the first Real Day of bagging bulbs in The Second Secret Location. we packed a lot .. probably about 2000 of them. that is a lot, however it's barely a dent in what we have to do.. somewhere around 120,000 or so. i have never worked in an assembly line quite like the one today though .. so much energy -- it was lots of fun. having a ghetto blaster on pretty loud kept things going at a furious pace and it was definitely satisfying after doing office work all week.

big ups to the p.a.f. massive!

i am phasing in and out of sleepiness here. i think it's time to leave work and go home to eat and whatnot. tonight i may go rock climbing and i may also end up in the rock city area. the two are not related.

  • the day i tried to live

after counting and moving about 10,000 lightbulbs today, i went to speakers corner to have a little fun on camera. it was fun! i wont say what for .. but it wouldn't be hard to guess. :)

i saw james bond last night with emily and matt. i can't say the movie was quality, but it was definitely entertaining. it was cheesy in the austin powers way, however it was not supposed to be a comedy in the same way. just .. yeah. it's a renter. hehehe.

  • tired

so i pressed some button on my alarm clock that isn't snooze. i slept until 8:02 a.m. and i am supposed to start at 8 a.m.. agh. not a great way to start the day.. ended up having a good day overall though. i spent a good portion of the day writing a tutorial on image transfer and used the faux word "disk-ette-ette" lots. haha.

i don't feel very talkative today. not sure why.

using the StrongBad voice for a character in a play is fun.

i just noticed that i exported all the images for this week at 100 quality for jpeg compression. oops.

  • return to nanaimo

this is my first return to nanaimo.

when i say "i'm going home," remind me to qualify that statement with "i'm going home( to nanaimo)" or "i'm going home( to victoria)". yeah.

so, i'm in nanaimo now watching the mess in victoria on the new VI. the host of this show is advocating the premier staying in power in british columbia. and she has some guy in a red turtleneck with her to support her position. sitting across the circular table from them is moe sihota.

the host (pia shandell) said she felt a little sardonic and amused looking at the comments of some of the people asking for gordon campbell to resign. pia has displayed a shameful disposition the entire show. this is disgusting. there is no integrity in this situation. there is no way i can say that i trust gordon campbell after this. how can you? he was sober before he had the drinks. he made the decision, soberly, to have the drinks. did his car appear out of nowhere and demand to be driven?

i don't think so. this is so simple. his supporters are going to dwindle and become embarassed, although some remain so proud that they can't even admit the gravity of the situation. this is the problem where the accused is also the judge and the jury. there is no statute which would remove a premier for something like this. gordon campbell is clearly drunk still, only now with power.

there are so many things to say about this. he says he was not smiling in his mug shots. the cbc story shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was. his remorse may be real, but it was definitely scripted.

when the media asked him about previous occassions of driving under the influence and if any existed, he said "not to the best of my knowledge." this answer is unsatisfactory. i want a "yes" or a "no" to a close ended question. do not modify it. it is black and white. in british columbia, it is a criminal offence to drink and drive. if he admits that he has done so before, that would mean he wasn't eligible to lead the liberal party.

christie clark, the deputy premier tried to diffuse the situation by mentioning something about it being a vacation. you hear that kids? it's okay to do stupid shit on vacation! oh happy day..

this is so sad. i am embarassed to be living in a province where the premier can do things like this. he isn't even eligible to apply for the job i have right now.

gary collins says that it's a personal issue and has nothing to do with his job as premier. i would agree, except there's no way in hell that being premier has nothing to do with decision making. this is all about poor decision making. make the connection, gary. i'm worried about him.

pia shandell, christie clark and gary collins are all of the train of thought that if they turn their head on this issue, all will be good. that is neglectful. we have no way to have confidence in our "honourable" premier.

i do not condemn him as a person. he just isn't suitable for the title of his job. that is all.

Posted by davin at 7:56 PM | Permalink | Comments (7)

  • that's just sick

this just disgusts me. our premier. a figurehead of our province. one of the liberals said "he's just human, everyone makes mistakes."

weird or not weird, a lot of people look to the primier of the province to figure out what is okay and what is not okay. all of a sudden, gordon campbell is a drunk driver. every single person in the province who has been caught driving drunk feels a little weight taken off their own back. they think "oh, it's not so bad, look, he's doing it too."

it's not okay. he's smiling in some of the mug shots. this is disgusting. someone driving a vehicle is in charge of a lethal weapon. it's a big physical object that the driver can direct at speeds 8 times faster than what is needed to kill a person, usually cruising fast enough to easily kill someone. if people didn't take drunk driving seriously before, they almost definitely are not now.

he says he's sorry? he doesn't look like someone who is sorry. look at his mug shots, he's grinning like an idiot.

this is the guy who calls the shots for BC? please .. say it aint so. if he's getting caught drinking and driving, who is to say that he doesn't have his judgement impaired in places that are not checked? such as places that he'd be making decisions, maybe places that he takes his homework to?

i'll have to add "car" to the list of places where i don't trust gordon campbell to be in control.

that is sad.

what is not sad is that i have uploaded my featured artist mix to lefty.ca! woot!
download it.

  • the road to pipecitytownsouthsite

i'm back from nanaimo ... it was the last day of training. training week was good. i have met 30 new interesting people in the last four days.

rad!

that's pretty much all i have to say. i'm pretty tired from staying up late at night almost every night of the week and getting up early each morning for work.

i seem to like whats on late at night much better than the daytime. showcase shows weird movies, cbc does too, knightrider is on, conan o'brien is on, etc. that's enough to keep me awake.

in any case, i better stop it because i can't function that well in the day time without my sleep.

  • go canucks!

woooooo!

tonight i went to watch the canucks game at Piper's Pub with emily, dave, holly, andrew, kelly and cynthia. and we won!@#$^&*(~ i mean, they won. go team!

anyways, my proton radio featured artist set was on today and apparently there were over 400 listeners. dude. that is zope. i hope everyone liked it .. i worked really hard on it! i'll be posting it for download soon (it's 246 megs @ a 192k mp3) .. don't worry, it'll be hosted off of lefty.ca's phat pipes. 8)

in other news.. i took a bunch more pictures today .. i'm not sure how good they are, but some of them should be interesting, i reckon.

i have been pondering a few things lately. and in that pondering, i have decided .. nothing at all.

i need more time to obfuscate priorities.

when was the last time you spent half an hour with a two year old that was trying to convince you that she was a scary dragon? i wasn't scared.

really.

  • deadly

so, first day of work, first day of training.

i have a new nickname. "deadly davin."

is that deadly or whut!?

i have to admit, i am going slightly nutty without a USB port in sight to plug my canon into. ooga booga.

also, i think i'd like to set up PINE as a client on my machine so i can SSH in and check email that way. that would be way faster. hm. checking shaw's webmail on this computer takes about 5 minutes per email, not including reply. so, if i am not responding to your emails.. i will. but not until the weekend. :)

everything here in nanaimo is awesome. but, i am terribly homesick at this moment. that is all.

  • cue and eh

krishen's cue: very nice shot! what part of nanaimo is that?
davin's eh: that's actually victoria eh! that was shot at the panorama leisure centre. i don't have any USB ports to plug my camera into here. eh.

krishen's cue: did you post that entry from Auntie Arlene & Uncle Hans place?
davin's eh: yes i sure did, they have a performa 5200CD. rad, a computer model with CD as a part of it. ol' skoo!

krishen's cue: how was the press room?
davin's eh: it was fun, hardly anyone was there, but i had a good time talking to mzat, ellusive, collin, visa, phil and a few local DJ's. zope.

krishen's cue: how'd you get there?
davin's eh: ellusive / andy and his girlfriend picked me up. he lives close-ish by!

krishen's cue: is it walking distance?
davin's eh: no, not really .. kind of though .. maybe if it was warmer out.. but it would probably take about an hour . .so i guess that isn't walking distance. i was only outside for a bit and it made my cold a lot worse. ack.

kevin's cue: where are the pictures Dav.
davin's eh: everywhere! do you mean the ones from Saturday night? they're still on My Camera. i am USB portless. augh!

kevin's cue: how are you finding The Mo.
davin's eh: the mo is not bad. i went milling around the mall today with my aunt. that was cool. i found this hoodie that was looking pretty good on the hanger but i didn't like it on me. i don't think that has anything to do with nanaimo though. hmmm.. nanaimo is a lot busier than i thought it was. there's a lot of traffic on bowen road. i live near something known as "cyber city." yes indeed. there are strange space crafts and blinking lights on them. it's amazing i say. i'll go get a shot of it tonight or another night when i don't have a cold.

devon's cue: vancouver > nanaimo
davin's eh: that's not a cue, eh!

i miss everyone in victoria!

tomorrow morning is my first day at training.. should be entertaining. :)

in nanaimo! wooooo!

i went for a walk with my Auntie Arlene to see where I would be working.. it's about a ten minute walk from where I am living. tonight I think hitting the press room would be fun, and then sleeeeeeep. :)

oh and i don't seem to be able to check my shawlink email from here. so send email to my shaw account. i'll get that.

  • deep dish

haha :)

krishen left for florida (again) today. sunday i leave for nanaimo.

so anyways, i recorded my mix last night. but i didn't turn the webserver (this webserver) off before i did it. i should've. i had many visitors last night and there are some recording glitches because of it.

ugh, so i have to redo the mix now.

gah!

  • recording time

the decks are all set up and it is time to do my second proton radio mix. this particular mix is a featured artist mix and it's going to be aired on proton radio on January the 8th. that's a week yesterday. the thing that will be extra super cool and elite about this mix is that it'll be the first time anyone hears the finished version of my newest track, "arctic exploration." i just finished it this afternoon.

yesterday i wrote a new DJ bio. it was easy. i had a really tough time with bio's before, especially of the DJ variety. there are a few stock phrases and beyond that, it's all about what the DJ has actually done besides DJing. most DJ writeups / bios that i've seen kinda go like:

DJ JOHN-E HAS BEEN SPINNING EPIC TRANCE FOR 6 MONTHS AND IS A FAVOURITE IN THE INTERIOR OF MANITOBA. HIS SETS LEAVE YOU SOARING IN THE TRANCE HORIZON AND ARE PUMPIN' IN A WAY THAT YOU WILL NOT SOON FORGET!!!!!! PREPARE TO GO OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway, my bio isn't exactly too different than that. well maybe it is. the point is... is that kind of writing makes me not want to write. writing on this blog has helped me get past that. yay blog!

you'll be able to see the writeup on the proton radio site on the 8th. or maybe sooner. i don't know when they're going to put it up.

change of subject here. one of the people from 'the group' named sandra (of paul and sandra.. they've commented a few times on here) is in the hospital for something pretty serious. i'm sending my good thoughts to her and i hope everyone who knows her is too. read julie's website for more info.
