• 108,000 lightbulbs

Today myself and my cohorts at The Secret Location counted most of 108,000 lightbulbs. These are not just any lightbulbs.. they're Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs. Duuuude! They're worth about $10-$20 each.. and we're giving them ALL away. Dude.

Yesterday was my website's busiest day yet. I'm not sure why.

Time to get my stuff together and make my way out to Hush soon for myself and Yoseff's weekly "Lift" residency. I missed last week as I had training and I'm not going to be able to stay very late tonight. It will still be good though!

  • THIS POST REVEALS ALL!

This weekend sleeping in was a luxury like no other.

:)

Today I made a casarole that is so good that I don't want to finish it, just so I'll have some left.

This afterrnoon I mixed records with nickgurns.. if I had a shoutcast solution for OSX, I'd be using it. But I don't .. and my searches have proved fruitless.

Alas.

I've started work on another CD .. somewhat based on the proton set.. so it will feature many of the same tracks, but in a CD length mix. Also it will have some other goodies in it that you likely wont hear anywhere else. :)

My first day of work is tomorrow, and unlike most of my other jobs (except the Ministry of Education), I feel adequately trained to start with confidence. This is good!

Geek stuff:
Krishen recommended an elite new RSS newsreader called NetNewsWire. Basically it reads headlines from news websites and collects the first paragraph for a sample of reading material. It keeps track of what you've read and what you have not read, and it automatically checks for new news every 30 minutes. The cool part is that with the version of moveable type that I am running, it's coded so that entries on my blog and krishen's blog count as news entries, and so this news reader picks up on whenever I or (more usefully) Krishen makes a new entry, it shows up as new news!

Today at work -- the fourth day of work -- we practiced the skit that we will be performing in Victoria elementary schools. At first I was kind of dreading it, but I knew it would be fun.. and I was right! I played the Wizard. I wore a Zope wizard's hat and had a magic wand of Power(smart).

Tomorrow is our last day of training and then we start going out next week. Thursday we start at 5 a.m. and finish at noon. Later I will be heading to Vancouver to see Sasha play a 4 hour set with Sean Cusick / Sean Q6 opening up for him. This will be radcore!

Speaking of radcore, mr. lefty has hosted the Velocity set as well as the brand spankin' new September 2002 Proton Radio mix I just finished. It clocks in at 2 hours and 11 minutes and is one hell of a dark ride.

Enjoy. :)

Last night I went swimming at the Commonwealth swimming pool. I had not been there in a very long time. I forgot what it was like to jump off thirty-three foot tower. Kind of like flying.. wooooooooooot!

  • second and third day of work

Day 2 was long but very informative at BC Hydro. Lots of interesting stuff. Did you know that C.F.L.'s (short for Compact Fluorescent Light) consume 75% less energy than normal lightbulbs that produce the same amount of lumens (light measurement unit)?!?!?!?!

Well now you do. Also they last 8-10 times as long as regular lightbulbs. Oooo!

:)

It's interesting stuff and the company is really organized and is doing a good job of training and getting all 26 new employees into the swing of things. Neaaat!

I've met several nice people as well. There seem to be a bunch of musicians in the group! That is definitely cool.

Time to go for coffee. :)

  • first day o work

Today I woke up at 6:45 a.m.

Whoah!

Had my first day of work today. It was awesome! I'm looking forward to this work term. :D

Thanks Krishen, Devon and Chrissie for the good luck! And Krishen, haha, you're so right.

:)

In other news.. I finished my proton radio mix today.. it should be in rotation soon. Actually half of it already is. I had to cancel the upload to the proton FTP server however, as there were blips in the digital recording and I had to fix it. I didn't notice that it left half the file there, leaving the head honcho of proton radio to think that it was the full thing. Whoops! I'm submitting the full version now with its massive ending. w0ot!@#

  • one and a half hour movie

Tonight I saw "One Hour Photo" with Robin Williams etc. It was alright.

To be honest, I expected a lot more out of it.

For all those who are intending on seeing it still, go see it if you want. It didn't suck by any stretch of the imagination. The sound in the movie is quite well done.

Tomorrow I start training at BC Hydro. woooooo! Er that means I must set my alarm for 7 a.m.

Done.

--

Devon: It didn't work. Unreal Tournament worked though.

Krishen: I attempted, again, to read Jane Hamilton's "A Map Of The World." I'm going to try again tonight. Man, I suck at reading. meh.

  • jimmy van m

Was awesome last night.

But first: the coffee meet earlier in the night was fun. About 20 people came in total. Braeden was able to give out a bunch of flyers that people could use to get into Sugar for $10 with to see Jimmy Van M. He left a few too many, so we decided to get artistic with my black marker:

Jimmy Van Zorro by me:

Jimmy Van Mullet by Mr Gurns:

The opening DJ, Alex Joy, I had been wanting to see ever since I saw him on the flyer some time ago. He's a local DJ. I have never heard of him until I saw him on the flyer and all of a sudden he was opening for Jimmy Van M. Wild.

Unfortunately Alex Joy was a disappointment, letting mixes slide and then cutting them out when it just wasn't working. Sometimes he would not even cut them out. He was missing cue points and doing weird fades. His track selection was a bit much, playing peak time stuff for a good half an hour before Jimmy was supposed to go on, and then he played 10 minutes into Jimmy's set.

One of the big reasons I am critical on this level is that Noble House has a tradition of having quality opening DJ's like Jimbo, James Boatman and Pascal.

In any case, it must have been very exciting for Alex Joy to be opening up for a world class DJ like Jimmy Van M. Here's a bit about Jimmy:

  • He has records and remixes out on Bedrock and Fluid
  • He's with Balance and had a residency at Twilo
  • He put together Sasha & John Digweed's Northern Exposure tours and club nights, as well as opening for the duo where ever they played on the tours for a good while

That should be enough.

Before he went on, I got him to sign my copy of Sanctuary:

Jimmy Van M came on and there was only smooth mixing for the rest of the night. It was not perfect but it was damn close - possibly one of the tightest sets I've heard. And his programming was wicked. He built it up slowly, starting with some house and moving slowly but surely into the progressive arena. About three quarters of the way into his set, he played The Ambush vs. Phools Inc - Assymetric which is a favorite choon of mine.. that was great. By the time 2 a.m. had come around he was playing progressive trance and it was awesome. Everyone cheered for the encore and he played a few more, his last one being the LSG remix of Humate's classic "Love Stimulation." Goooood choice!

I had been putting off seeing Jimmy Van M for quite some time -- probably 3 or 4 years, but man is he good. If you ever get the chance to go see him, do it. He rocks.

  • who says victoria doesn't rock?

Tonight we even had an earthquake to prove it!

The best information on the quake is actually from Washington.

Either that or it was Jimmy Van M getting off his learjet to play at Sugar tonight. M is for Massive, doncha know! This evening at 9 pm we're having a rave.vic coffee meet, the first in many moons. Should be good times!

That is all for now!

Today I am getting a haircut! Wow!@#@$*@!)%(#~@)#~!

Did you know that haircuts are exciting?

Well.. they are. Also on the same boring topic, I ran out of hair gel and I had to use this glitter gel that somehow ended up in my bathroom at home. I don't know where it came from, honestly.

I acquired this photo from some website many years ago. No photographer was credited, which is a shame because it's a stunning shot of Hale Bopp. The effects and manipulations were done in Photoshop 7.

It's almost 4 a.m. and I can't sleep. So I do what bored bloggers do (besides graphic design.)

I started staring at my stats page.

I was prowling through the user agents report when I noticed that the google bot had been roaming around these parts. Interesting. So, I do a search on google for the words "davin" and "blog." I don't find my website anywhere in the first few pages but I do find some pretty weird stuff, like:

"I know, I promised you all a picture of Davin and here it is!! He usually wears glasses but today he wasn't. I didn't go up to him to take the pic but Denise and Airene took it for me and my friend Lynn. Goodness, I just love his smile! But, May told me that he might be gay! Doesn't that suck major ass?"
(taken from www.orgasmic-tendencies.net)

"Hey Davin, Evan, and Greg: I *still* think that you are a bunch of assholes who should be bitch-slapped for even thinking of being such petty bitches."
(taken from dougsblog.com)

"I've read davin's blog, so I know for a fact *he's* talking shit about you!"
(taken from www.queue.com)

haha

PS: I have finally remembered the name of a movie I have to watch. It is called "walking life." I think that's it. It's animated. Has anyone seen it? Thoughts?

  • death becomes life

In my dream last night, I was house-sitting for someone. Some guys with guns came looking for him. They came into the house and told me to get down on the ground.

I was told to keep my head to the ground and not to look up. So I did, but then I peaked up to see the person's face. I looked back down again. He shot me in the head.

So, I was dead.

I turned into a ghost though, which was pretty interesting.

In other news..

I spent 5 hours working on a mix last night for Proton Radio when I got this msg on my screen:

"Peak 3.0 has run out of write requests! [Okay]"

So, after losing 4 or 5 hours of mixing, I have discovered that Peak 3.0 doesn't like files over 2 gigs in size. Bah. I will try again today, this time I'm going to make it shorter tho. So after that frustration at 1 a.m. I decided that it wasn't really a good idea for me to spend much longer in this room (my recording studio is in my bedroom, er and so is this server, and umm everything, yeah). I went on IRC to see if anyone wanted to go for coffee.

No.

No one.

So, I went on ICQ and there was Jim, who happened to be up. We went for an enjoyable 2 hour coffee at a 24 hour food and beverage establishment and then I came home and went to sleep. I can always count on Jim for good conversation -- especially after something tech-related goes wrong, because I know he can relate to that level of frustration. He has had several hard drives fail him in the last while, which is far worse than losing 5 hours of work. 5 hours is a setback, although it may be a blessing in disguise because there were parts of the mix I wasn't quite happy with.

  • brokasso's torment

What a lazy sunday. It was great though, I watched Panic Room and ate yummy food and drank lovely drinks. Panic room was okay.. definitely a renter though. Well, mind you, being that it comes out on video in a few days, you don't really have much choice.

I want to see Gus Gus.

Saturday night consisted of shoutcasting with SpyGuy/Ben, then going to my friend Carly's houseparty, then Hush with Yoseff, Braeden and Brent Carmichael (which was awesome) and then to Alzu's and back to Carly's for a bit more of a house party. From start to finish it was a fun night. At Carly's I spun for a while but it was mostly a kitchen party and barely anyone was in the living room where the decks were.

I had been playing fairly well for about an hour when I decided to hit stop on the tech1200 right in the middle of the Bedrock mix of Underworld's "Cowgirl" to see if anyone in the kitchen would notice. Nobody noticed.

I started scratching, making some awful noise. Still, no one noticed. I waited a bit and then I hit start again and then a bunch of people came into the room.. rofl.

A bit weird but.. going to a party and DJing is pretty lame when no one is dancing or listening .. not because no one is dancing specifically -- it makes it much more fun, but when 90% of the party doesn't notice a difference, quite frankly I'd rather be in the kitchen socializing. It's a party and a CD could've done what I was doing at that point. Anyway I only stayed on the decks for a few more minutes and then I stopped the music and started scratching until the next DJ agreed to come on and play.

Hehehehe.

I mean, it's not as though I think that the DJ should be a focal point at a house party, because I don't. I'd just rather be in the kitchen at a kitchen party, that's all. :)

  • firstfloor

Vancouver yesterday was fun, though a bit rushed as we arrived a bit late and only had a few hours to run around town. We basically started at Robson and Seymour.

Me and Craig went through the scattered Vinyl section in Virgin. I picked up the new Starecase album, Firstfloor, on Vinyl.

I looked at the Vinyl. It was missing at least a few songs. WTF? I went upstairs after the purchase and found the CD. It had all the songs (of course), unmixed, and was $11 cheaper than the vinyl release.

So I did an exchange.

But..What is going on with this? First Sasha releases the Airdrawndagger vinyl without my favourite song on it from the album, Cloud Cuckoo, and now Starecase does this.

arghghghh @#%*!#$^!#$%(~@)$*~!@%@(#&!%^(!@#*@#$@()!

I was just going to say .. they're on different labels.. however, they're both released through Kinetic. This is really disappointing. On the other hand, it's not so bad as I have the CD and it's unmixed.

Back to that new Starecase album.. I've been waiting for it for about 2 years now. Not as long as I waited for the new Sasha album, but still a hell of a long time! Here is my review of it, track by track:

Faith - This is vocal breaks track featuring vocals from Jokate Benson. If you know Starecase's remix of Neve - Sacrifice, it's in the same sort of vein as that. The lyrics are not listed anywhere in the album, but they sound quite nice. This track came out as a single with a Loafer remix, a General Midi remix and a Jean Jaques Smoothie remix.

Understand Me - stretched and compressed vocals reverberating through what sounds like a cross of a television and a tunnel start off this blissed out breaks track. Very atmospheric sounds echo throughout the tune and a groovy bassline carries the tune to a great breakdown. Lovely tune. Do you understand me?

[Sound Two] Second Time - The third track on First Floor features vocals by one known as Omi. Bass so thick you can sit on it is one of the Starecase staples, and this time it is coupled with bouncey vocals and intricately layered percussion. Not sure what the vocals are all about, or for that matter, what "Sound Two" has to do with it. Enjoyable nonetheless!

Come In - A clever breakbeat track to start with turns into a bassline rollercoaster quickly. The breakdown and the second part of the tune proves why Starecase is one of the top electronic acts out there today. Nothing less than spectacular and my favorite track on the album.

Stuck In The Middle - Stomping, grinding and pounding. This is probably the most in-your-face track on the album and is sure to devastate dancefloors where-ever it is played. A dizzying bassline bounces through the percussion which is tight in typical Starecase fashion and it sounds awesome. The breakdown is floaty and gorgeous and it extends over the rest of the song, which revs up quickly. Play this one loud and enjoy. Actually play the whole album loud and enjoy. Maybe go driving to this one in particular. Ahh go driving to all of them. This one just kicks some serious ass!

See - Starecase teams up with singer Charlie Newlands for a poppy affair. It starts off innocently enough with the vocal, but then it gets a bit weird with strange high pitched noises phasing in and out of the tune. Before you know it some pads drift in and tease you into a brief journey before the vocals come back in. Well done. This has also come out as a single and features Timo Maas and Rulers of the Deep on remix duties, as well as a Starecase dub.

Aishiteru - This is a downtempo piece with guitars twanging in and out. Soothing and beautiful. This is a gem of a track.

Bitter Little Pill - What are you on? That's what the vocalist, Sean Cook, wants to know. This one came out as a single with a few different mixes by Starecase themselves. More of an alternative sound to it. Catchy.

The Bitter End - Well this is supposed to an abrasive, bitter ending. It is not. It's a blistering affair, to be sure, but it's also sweet and the percussion is just a pleasure to listen to.

All in all this album is a good listen from start to finish and should be played loud on a good stereo with a beverage and a friend of choice.

I have a starecase production & remixology page which is pretty much the most up-to-date and complete Starecase production & remixology page on the Internet. Take a look if you enjoy the group!

I have it installed, apparently, but I am not seeing any report generation yet. If you installed it and gotten it to work the way you want, do you have any tips or things that I need to look out for in order for it to output reports into a designated folder on a schedule?

  • who's gonna ride your wild horses?

It had been more of a love song. Now it was about sexual jealousy. The lyrics may have been hurried but it has its share of telling psychological insights into the battlefield of love, all the same.

"Well, you lied to me ... 'cos I asked you to," Bono sings, and you don't need to be told what the context is. And it comes back, in the final chorus, to oral sex: "Who's gonna taste your salt water kisses? Who's gonna take the place of me?"

"It's been said to me alright", Bono concedes, "that there's a lot of reference to oral sex on the record. It's a very equal position. But I hadn't thought about the cumulative effect. I guess there's something for everybody. Don't try this at home [laughs]."

  • finally..

a movie that I can't wait for to come out!

Someone please tell me how grammatically incorrect that last sentence was. Please.

Oh and it appears to be 9/11 already.

Hmmm.

At this moment I don't really have anything profound to say. It's been one of our earth years since something really bad happened which had a lot of media coverage, however, really awful things happen every day in countries that don't have the media power that the United States has. It was horrible, yes, but this is a sick, sick world and 9/11 was a symptom of the problem. As Jim pointed out in a discussion about this the other day, another great tragedy has occured since then, this time in the form of people's loss of some basic rights throughout America.

I don't want to get political at 3 a.m.

I think what I am trying to say is that it's been a year since the two planes flew into the WTC towers and it's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the world's problems.

It really is.

That is all.

  • it's monday! time to lift!

lift it all up, whut!

this is the second week of lift at hush.. with myself and yoseff as residents. we still don't have any posters on telephone poles, but I wonder how effective that is. i think that we have to spend a couple mondays plastering uvic with posters and flyers. i believe we'll enjoy the results.

at the club over the weekend, there was a notable increase in attendence, mainly due to school being back in season.

i've been waiting for someone to come over for the last few hours. this is a ridiculous waste of time. i am not angry; i am just disappointed because we could've gotten pretty far with the song we're working on, and in turn we're no further than before, even though i've put my time in.

ugh.

  • get movin'

aww yeah!

What a lazy sunday. Did.. nothing special. Most of my time was spent looking at the discussion (roffle) of a news item regarding Canada not backing the U.S. in their invasion of Iraq. I roffle at the word discussion because, for the most part, it was just 14 year old Americans bashing Canada for not ignorantly assisting Dubya in toppling Hussein. And if they weren't 14 year olds, they sure had me fooled. Most of the discussion was crap not worth wading through, but I did anyways in search of some intelligent discussion.

This proved to be futile.

What was made apparent, however, was that from top to bottom, from yahoo message board to the whitehouse and everywhere in between, this is a battle of ignorance - both in what it is for and what it is against.

After that waste of time, I went with Mina, nickgurns and SpyGuy up to Nanaimo to go to the Press Room for Dizzy's "Atmosphere" to see DJ's The Sorceress, Christian Alvarez, Robb G and Jelo. It was enjoyable -- I ran into Shannon there who has a newly shaved head. She did it to raise money for cancer research which I must give her mad props for!

It's time to pass out -- Sunday is done like dinner, only more so.

A while ago Chrissie lent me a bunch of her tapes that she had made of the RGM show. As I slowly go through them, I'm coming across tonnes of great music, great mixing, moments of clearness on the air, and moments of silliness.

I will, in all likelyhood, be posting these clips on the website as I find them. Here is one from the classiv show that features nickgurns on the decks (he has the Quivver mix of Pete Lazonby's "Sacred Cycles" on in the background), myself on the main mic and Bedlam with Spyguy also on the surrounding mics. • east sooke massive

I went to East Sooke Park today with Jim. It was just gorgeous out there..

Gorgeous is probably my most over-used word lately. That isn't particularly a bad thing .. I have to be constantly surrounded by beauty to over-use it, so things are cool.

On the way out we stopped at Burger King where you could make chicken noises to get a free chicken salad as a part of a promotion for the new B107.3 FM. Also you could say a promo phrase for a free milkshake:

"B 107.3 PLAYS TODAYS HITS".

Jim managed to pull this one off for the free milkshake but I managed to screw it up about 6 times and then decided it just wasn't worth it for the free milkshake. Besides, Jim's milkshake didn't look that great anyways, especially after just having a Vanilla Creme Frappicino (spelling on that?) from Starbux. Mmmmmm....

After that we cruised back to Gordon Hood, at which time the sun was setting. We went up on Mt. Doug and witnessed one hell of a neat looking sunset. Jim took sun-setting pictures and there should be something to show off soon!

Tonight I'm going swimming at Oak Bay Rec. People are asking me lately "what's with you and swimming?!" Well, I figure it's kind of like going for coffee, except with less clothes on. So it's kind of like going to the bar, except you can hear eachother. And go on the water slide.. and the hot tub, and the swinging rope, and the sauna.. oh yeah, and you can even swim!

Wow!

So I find all of this enjoyable. Additionally, I enjoyed going swimming when I was younger quite a bit. There's just something about going out for a swim that is incredibly refreshing and that holds a great deal of importance to me. Being on the interweb too much makes you dirty. All those computer viruses and such.

I have decided I really enjoy this blogging thing. Writing is good, and even somewhat therapeutic. Thanks Devon, Jim, and Julie! Word to the massive.

okay, so I read something on devon's website in regards to "american idol." I know that it's a TV show, and I know tonnes of people are watching it.

However, I'm not. I also didn't watch survivor. Now they've got some wank named Jeremy from Survivor doing commercials for Subway. And I'm like "Jeremy WHO?" Celebrity endorsements are supposed to lend trust and familiarity to their given marketed product. However I just am not seeing that from this guy. I guess the people who watched Survivor trust this guy. Hahaha. I just find him irritating.

"What's Jeremy eating today!? Well it's a knuckle sandwich!"

Maybe I oughta watch more TV so that I can subscribe to these ad campaigns.

That would be meaningful.

Not.

I'm over at Ria's now. We just had dinner and now we're both nerding out on the computers before heading out for a Sunday evening coffee.
