today was our last day at retailers in victoria for the vancouver island phase two bc hydro power smart youth team, or viptbchpsyt for short.
that went fast.
tonight, to celebrate not having to work tomorrow and having exceeded our goals by quite a bit, we’re going to go to the Comedy night at the Tally Ho Inn and then we’re going to hit up Legends.
so then, take that to the street, aiiiight?!
i’ve never been to a comedy night before. should be interesting stuff.
i went to saltspring island yesterday with laurie and robin. all pictures were taken by me except where specified otherwise. warning: if you don’t like sunrise or sunset shots, or think they are cheesy and unnecessary, this post really isn’t for you.

i went to saltspring today.
more on that later.
i am currently mixing live with spyguy on the leftycast / spycast.
jim posted a little thingie with questions on his site. if you haven’t been to jim’s elite site yet, go look and fill out his thingie. here are my answers:
my name is davin.
i was born in victoria.
i am born in victoria.
currently, i live in victoria. i have plans to move elsewhere in january. today i got another job offer from bchydro to work in nanaimo on their powersmart campaign there. how could i say no? great work, great pay, great people. great opportunity. so i don’t know who i am going to live with yet, but we’ll see.
my job at bchydro is kickass. people ask me if bchydro is going to be privatized. i tell them ‘not yet’ because .. well, why would i know before anyone else? i don’t work in the communications dept. so then.
i do some public relations for power smart. it is hella fun. it is mostly comprised of going to retailers, giving away lightbulbs, educating elementary school children, and on some days like today, putting on plays for pre-schoolers. it is rad. rad i say.
this is my 2nd personal website. the first was on the victoria telecommunity network in 1995.
i consider myself a web designer but i am not certain i do a great job for anyone who has purposes too different than my own. unless they have a lot of money. then it’s cool. whatever.
i am a family person. i love my brothers and my parents. and pretty much all my relatives.
my brother krishen got me into electronic music, my brother anand got me into making it, and my brother neil got me into searching for the very best and the newest. my dad sings and plays the guitar. my mom sings and plays music that i don’t know all the time. neat.
all my friends have good to completely wacky senses of humour. this is a requirement. save serious for accountants, please.
i was one of the idiots waving signs around at the pete tong show. mine said “massive.” jim complained about this on his blog. he got my attention that way after i (somewhat obnoxiously) got his, inadvertently on both parts. wh00ps! but lets hear it for speaking ones mind. if jim had not, we would likely not have met, at least not at that juncture. but i am glad we did.
we semi-regularly go for coffee, shoot the shizzat, and hang out or walk around. i enjoy that kind of thing quite a bit.
jim regularly comes out to play at these ‘techno dance events’ and it is good times, and even gooder times at the inevitable denny’s excursion afterwards.
i do monday nights at hush with yoseff. i dj under the alias “ariz0na” which originates from me making fun of my friend steve who calls himself “iowa” online. “iowa” is an obscure reference to a character in some budget hockey movie that i’ve never seen, nor do i recall the title of it. i forgot to change my nick back to “merLin” or whatever i had at the time and people started calling me “ariz0na” regularly. when it came to pick a name for djing, i just used it because someone decided to play their one and only DJ gig the same night as my first one and they used “DJ Davin.” what are the chances of that? i never saw him play another gig again. maybe i could be dj davin now. or just davin. yeah.
no, i am not from arizona. i have never been to arizona. it seems like it would be a neat place to visit, though.
i have never met another person named davin. i don’t know if i’d like to. it’s kind of neat being The Davin.
i like my name.
…… and that’s basically me.
i am actually going to see bowling for columbine with nickgurns and julie! wheeeee!!
house was always about freedom, not convention. a truly independent and personal outlook – that’s acid house, not a smiley t-shirt in 88, white levi’s in 90, hardcore v. balearic in 92, “brand identity” in 96 blah blah blah. superclub? i’d rather go to a supper club. “proper” house? the more improper the better. “real” house? who dictates what’s real – as soon as anyone’s dictating, it ain’t real in my book. so i might listen to metal or r’n’b too – without the freedom i found in the spirit of house, techno, electronica whatever you want to call it – well i wouldn’t have found it in me to do that. everyone is welcome in the house music church – a tribal gathering that means a gathering of all tribes, not a gathering for one tribe only to the exlusion of all others. something happened when house came along – a democratisation and demystifying of everything about making music and the music industry. punk had walked the walk, but house talked the talk. suddenly you really could make & distribute your own music globally without going through legions of “suits”. no amount of corporatisation can change that fact. as the song says, “house is a feeling” – not an old school compilation (sic), not a double page glossy magazine ad, not a convenient musical formula for soundtracking tv ads for range rovers. 4/4 not 4×4. maybe the time has come to mutate a bit, kick over a few statues. but that needs to evolve away from the spotlight. maybe that can’t be done in this age of instant media saturation, but we can try. change or die. my idea of house – therapy for the soul. whatever your faith – keep it.

not 4.. but 5 weeks in december! it’s going to be another great month! of particular interest in this lineup is NeoFunkcian, who is going to be spinning a full set of progressive breaks — a rare treat that ought not to be missed. the only other person in town who plays them is myself. the records are kind of rare, so you really have to be on the lookout to collect enough for a set.
in the second week, we have jules / jussed / julian coming over from vancouver for his victoria debut. expect quality progressive from this guy, he’s got a solid selection.
the third week features vesfu, traditionally a funky house dj. this time around, he’s going to show off his progressive side of things. should be interesting!
the fourth week will be myself and yoseff doing the resident’s night thang, and the final week will feature the return of dj spyguy to the wheels of steel. besides the dj competition, i haven’t seen or heard of him playing out in quite some time and that’s really a shame, because he’s an excellent dj. that’s a reason he was/is an rgm resident.
it’s saturday night!
i had another great day at work today, a little adventure, and mostly office work.
i did a little more tweaking to the website layout today and now i am at spyguy’s mixing it up live on the lefty/spy stream!
since i don’t have to work until 11:30 am tomorrow, tonight i am headed to hush. i am not sure who is playing. i heard something about czech, but am not sure. maybe i should check ravevictoria.com to find out! oh yep, it says there that it is czech tonight. cool.
yoseff and I figured out the december lineup for chlorine and it looks like it’s going to be great. i’ll be working on the poster tomorrow evening after work.
after much discussion, I decided to watch harry potter tonight instead of bowling for columbine, and then watch bowling another night soon, and also see harry potter 2 soon. so yeah. sounds like I have my priorities in order now. haha 🙂
a bit of a design-shift — not a redesign — of the website. sorta more like how I want it, sorta kinda. how elite is that blue up there now?
it is no less than zope.
i have applied for the nanaimo wave of the powersmart campaign. hopefully i’ll get it. i’m not sure about commuting, i could possibly stay with my aunt there, and come back 2 days a week. not sure yet. still have to see if i can get the job. november 29th is when i’ll know. if i was to get it, it would start on january the 6th, i believe, which would give me enough time to have a decent holiday, although i’m not so sure about travelling now. 6 days may not be enough time, and i definitely want to be in victoria for new years. there is always may for Project Cocoa as well, which i’d like to go to but i’m not certain i see that materializing yet for me.
that is all.
